Reviews indicated the best route down would be via the Champlain Mountain North Ridge Trail (formerly Bear Brook Trail) which terminates on Park Loop Road just north of the Precipice Trailhead.
We did this on our first day in the park and have gotten to the champlain summit on other trails and the hike is worth the views its spectacular.

We brought our lunch and ate at the top before going onto the Bowl Trail and Gorham Mountain and back on the trail that parallels the Park Loop Road and across the beach to the Great Head trail.
If you find yourself in the Bar Harbor area, or Acadia Park, I highly recommend that you visit and climb Champlain Mountain as well as Beehive Mountain.

We hiked the Shore Path while visiting Acadia National Park in early Sept. Gorgeous views of the shore and you can get to Thunder Hole from the main path.
This is a great walk along the ocean and you can start anywhere on Main Street North of the hospital, walk North until you pass the park, turn right and follow the path as it curves around the shore.
