Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

A beautifully curated collection about important history. The docent hosting the displays was friendly, well-informed, and happy to answer questions. We saw a special art exhibition as well as some very well done historical materials. Bravo to the local society and volunteers.

Fantastic museum tucked away near the coast. Lovely gentleman volunteering and told us a bit about the museum. Lots of unique historical pieces that were unexpected to see. We could have been there for hours! Don’t miss it if you are in the area. We really enjoyed the village, too.

The ships on campus are closed to the public due to COVID, but the landing in Castine is big enough for you to get a good view of the ship and the other MMA boats docked there for students to use.

Short, scenic walk with two different paths out to an ocean overlook. Path is narrow and not too difficult, but there is some poison ivy off to the sides, so stay on the path.

Lighthouse is small and attractive, made of stone rather than brick.

Path is some cleared meadow with ferns, bracken, and scrubby sumac in fall color, plus evergreens.

Interesting place I hadn’t seen before. The downtown is very small but cute cozy. Seemed very quite for 4th of July week. Weather was fine, but gray, which is my least favorite color of the sky, ever. Especially March thru July in Maine.

Village is a working waterfront which means at times it can smell fishy. I wouldn’t choose this location for a honeymoon, but probably a good place to visit if you want to learn about the area and the industry.

Interesting to people who like finding or learning about new experiences. Not your everyday vacation location. Good for contemplating, writing, and painting.

Borrowed the Pentagoet Inn bikes, picked up lunches at Markels Bakery and had picnic lunches at Fort Madison twice during our stay in Castine. The park is small, one picnic table, two benches. But it has a spectacular view across the bay, access to the rocky beach, very defined fortification mounds, and is a pleasant bike ride or walk from town. A short walk to the very good Wilson Museum (be sure and go downstairs)

Gallery B's multi-media works of beauty are thoughtfully displayed just up the block from the water. We were taken by the photographs, watercolors and sculpture.

Gregory Dunham has relocated his gallery to the Castine Road, Castine ME.

A new gallery, The Tarratine Gallery, on Main Street also shows Gregory's art.

His preferred medium is watercolor, and many of his watercolors are in the style of Andrew Wyeth. His artworks, which reflect a meditative quality, often include coastal images - images that cannot be walked away from, images with which the viewer wants to remain.

Very pretty lighthhouse, but because the property is privately owned, it felt awkward and like you were trespassing.

I took photos of this golf course (but eliminated them shortly thereafter) to send to my son, the avid golfer. He said it looked 'parched' and 'brown', and he was right -- they must conserve water in Castine, which is understandable with the brutal hot summer we've had in Maine. The course itself is okay -- hilly, and not plush by any means.

This market has nice provisions, and very good package salads and sandwiches, fresh fruit, cheese, rotisserie chicken, pastries and decent wine. It closes at 5 PM, so head over early to pick up a picnic lunch or dinner.
The roast beef sandwich is particularly good, you won't want to share it with your companion.
