Amazing that such beauty and history are free for the observer. We enjoyed our walk through the building to see the treasures.

Worth a visit for a meal in the Walnut Room and a peek at the Tiffany ceiling. No contemporary store offers this type of classic grandeur.

Long after he completed the untitled monumental sculpture that commands the Daley Plaza in downtown Chicago, Pablo Picasso said it represented the head of his Afghan hound. After its unveiling in 1967, Pulitzer Prize-winning newspaper columnist Mike Royko wrote: "Interesting design, I'm sure. But the fact is it has a long stupid face and looks like some giant insect that is about to eat a smaller, weaker insect." Whatever it is, the Picasso is a well known Chicago landmark, the first monumental abstract public artwork in downtown Chicago. Located at 50 West Washington Street, Standing 50 feet tall and weighing over 160 tons, the Picasso is built of Cor-Ten steel, the same material as the exterior of the Daley Center. It was assembled and constructed at the U.S. Steel Company in Gary, Indiana, and unveiled and dedicated in Daley Plaza on August 15, 1967. "A gift to the people of Chicago," Picasso said in his dedication letter, without explaining what the sculpture was intended to represent. It is known for its inviting jungle gym-like characteristics. Visitors to Daley Plaza can often be seen climbing on and sliding down the base of the sculpture.

Worthwhile stop for those curious about the folding bridges in Chicago. The museum is pretty small but does a good job of telling the story of Chicago's development through rivers. The exhibit weaves in an ecology theme that made it more interesting. I can't a speak to the value as I went free during Open Doors Chicago, but I had a good time.

We were hoping to see the Chagall Mosaics near the Four Seasons Hotel, but the site is under restoration now and we managed only to take a glimpse of the Mosaics through the opening in the fence. It was enough to feel Chagall’s Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter, but we would love to see it after the restoration.

The consolation prize for us was Frank Gehry’s modern lobby of the reception desk in the Inland Steel building opposite the Chagall’s Mosaics. Striking green crystals, a distinctive feature of that spacious lobby, are gorgeous. That’s a hidden gem.

Gorgeous 37th floors skyscraper is an iconic Art Deco landmark in Chicago. Its top floor is adorned with a thin layer of pure gold, which shines even on a dark rainy day. The lobby of the Pendry Hotel, which occupies part of the building now, is cozy and more modest than luxurious lounge of the Palmer Hotel, but is beautiful nonetheless.

I stopped by for Saturday afternoon mass during a recent layover. The church is modern and beautiful, with clean lines and gorgeous artwork. It's run by the Franciscan order and serves a growing Loop population. Was very glad I happened by. Lovely organ music, too.

My first visit to a Baha’i temple was in 1999 to the Lotus temple in New Delhi. The architecture, material and the surrounding gardens pleases the eye and the mind. Though this is a different design, this is also a similar experience.

They have a visitor centre with some parking and some volunteers explaining the principles of the faith and the history of the temple. They also have a short film.

The temple has stairs on all sides. They have seating for about 500 people covered by a high dome. They maintain silence. The ambience is very good for practice of meditation.

The faith has good following in the Middle East. They have temples in all continents, each of which is a technological marvel.

Native Chicagoans, like me, remember when State State in downtown Chicago was known as The Great Street, before there was a Magnificent Mile on the north side of the Chicago River. It was the street of Marshall Field's, the Chicago Theater, the Palmer House and Carson, Pirie, Scott and Company. Today, Carson's is known as the Sullivan Center, a 943,944-square-foot, three-building complex that houses the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and national retailer Target. Located at 1 South State Street, at the corner of East Madison Street, the structure is mostly known for its architecture. It was designed by Louis Sullivan in 1899 for a retail firm. Another famous architect, Daniel Burnham, also did work on the building. It is remarkable for its steel-framed construction, which allowed a dramatic increase in window area created by bay-wide windows, which in turn allowed for the greatest amount of daylight into the building interiors. The design was the first use of what became known as the Chicago window. At street level, the broad expanses of glass allowed for larger displays of merchandise to outside pedestrian traffic, creating the idea of the sidewalk showcase. Sullivan designed the unique corner entry to be seen from both State and Madison. The attractive ornamentation above the entrance gave the store an elegant and unique persona important to the building's competition with neighboring stores, including Marshall Field's. It was designated a Chicago Landmark and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1970 and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1975.

There are a handful of large public artworks scattered around downtown including The piece known as Miro's Chicago (formerly known as The Sun, The Moon and One Star) that is located along West Washington Street across from the large scale Picasso installation.

This is the work of Catalan artist Joan Miró (1981). What you see is an abstract figure made of steel, wire mesh, bronze, concrete and ceramic tiles. It is 12 metres tall and resembles a creature composed of various parts and brought to life. It quickly reminds one of various monsters found in Miró's many paintings and sculptures.

Have a look of you are in the area and interested in viewing public artworks. There are others by Dubuffet, Picasso, Chagall and Calder nearby that you can take in as well.

Compact, modern synagogue located in the center of downtown Chicago. Try to visit in the morning on a sunny day, when the sun shines through the colorful stained glass windows. You might have to phone in advance to be sure the building will be open to public visits.

We visited the London House hotel this past week and it was just as amazing as our last visit. The rooms were spacious, beds were comfortable and dreamy, georgegous bathroom, three excellent views, beautifully designed, and well supplied with bath essentials. The staff is also very amazing and take great care of us on every visit. In fact, they have demonstrated the best hotel service thus far. We also enjoyed dinner at the Land and Lake restaurant downstairs and it was delicious. We did go up to the rooftop and it was very pleasant vibe. Folks were having a great time and enjoying the view and the bar! This is also a central spot to watch the fireworks. We walked down a few blocks and got an awesome view!
    We will be back soon!
