Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Part of immersing yourself in a new city is just walking around and soaking it in. I'd really recommend walking along the Magnificent Mile, especially to see the incredible brutalist and art deco architecture.

Lots of options for restaurants. Not as many quality stores. Very crowded with impatient people but high energy vibes.

A huge radius encompassing everything. From shops , restaurants, convenience stores , hotels , theaters , historical buildings. Seeing an upward train , it reminds you of typical downtown. Be wary however of occasional sketchy situations at certain areas specifically at night time .

One of the best neighborhoods in Chicago to find restaurants, bars, bookstores and lots of art in a wide variety of venues. Great food, great art, fun browsing the stores.

Unique architecture and buildings with historic importance. Built in the 1960s and located right on the Chicago River in downtown, this building complex is not only famous for its unusual design but was the first urban high-rise development that was meant to encourage people to move back into the city. It was a futuristic self-contained "city withing a city" providing all the amenities that you need in one place including a theater, gym, swimming pool, ice rink, bowling alley, stores, restaurants, and even a boat marina. It became the model for other developments in cities throughout the US. Great views by strolling along the Chicago Riverwalk or even better you can go on an architecture boat tour on the river.

The Swedish museum is like 2-3 rooms, but it is like walking through "Kirsten's world" from American Girl. It took me an hour or so and I recommend it, but if time is limited, you can also just look in the Gift shop for free, and that was huge. They had good candy there, including chocolate bars and REAL Swedish Fish!!

The Galleria had tiny little booths for many different craftspeople. There was jewelry and blown glass and cards and a million other things. The Ann Salter restaurant was quite the walk away, but it rounded out my visit with some Swedish treats.

The RAYGUN store has really funny t-shirts and stationary products.

I really enjoyed the shops and the feel of this neighborhood and I would like to go back to see what I might have missed.

My Airbnb host suggested that I walk and explore the Astor Street area, and I sure was rewarded. A stunning selection of highly desirable Victorian residences from the 1880s, along with a couple of Art Deco gems. Beautiful tree-lined streets enhanced the overall experience. Only down side was the amount of dog excrement left by the numerous designer dogs.

A very walkable neighborhood in Chicago with lots of restaurants, shops, taverns, and breathtaking Churches. This is a neighborhood with Ukrainians, Russians, and Polish. Patios on West Division Street are great for cocktails and people watching. Authentic cuisine is offered in many of the small ethnic restaurants. You feel like you are in a European village rather than a Chicago neighborhood. Street parking is a challenge, but you can use a parking ap to reserve a spot in a church lot.

Hyde Park is the hub for U of Chicago and a few colleges of Theology. Academic vibes mixed with student hangouts, restaurants, shops and tree lined streets. Also the home of the palatial Museum of Science and Industry (along with its beautiful green space along Lake Shore Dr). Go for a day - better yet get an Airbnb for a week and enjoy this area like a local.

My family and I traversed through this area before and after we went to Wrigley Field. This neighborhood felt safe, and it was very dense with pedestrian traffic and police patrols. It was difficult to find parking. There was an abundance of stores, of restaurants, and of bars. I admired the large number of apartment buildings which faced Wrigley Field. This area was extremely walkable.

Greektown's easy to access as a visitor to Chicago; it's just west of the Kennedy expressway, is not far away from the Loop (downtown), and is the gateway to the West Loop, full of hip bars and restaurants. Easy public transit access via bus or CTA blue line stops.

Perhaps some of the character of Greektown has been reduced in recent years. This is due to some of the classic Greek restaurants along Halsted St. closing, due to either families deciding to get out of the business or shifting business conditions; the closure of some of the Greek-focused retail; and the gentrification of the surrounding neighborhood, now one of Chicago's most affluent. That said, it still has a Greek feel: there's the Hellenic museum; cool, Greek-focused architectural details; Greek street art; and a number of excellent Greek restaurants at which you can still get an authentic Greek meal and Greek hospitality.

    Worth a visit!

Oak Street in the Gold Coast neighborhood of the city is a fairly quiet street, which is famous for the luxury stores and boutiques. The street is very close to the north end of the N Michigan Avenue.

In the ever-changing market economy, the looks of Oak Street are also changing: some upscale shops and businesses are moving out, relocating to the neighboring streets, some new ones are moving in. The top designer brands and the shops -- Prada, Hermes, Dolce & Gabbana, Tom Ford, Harry Winston, Christian Louboutin, et al -- attract the attention and welcome visitors whose preference and joy is luxury shopping. Oak Street means just that: luxury shops, top brands, high quality, exquisite service, high prices.

Oak Street has a very memorable sign "Esquire", that used to beautify the movie theater (built in 1938). The theater is long gone, and now the building is the upscale Cooper's Hawk Winery & Restaurant. It's quite remarkable though, that the neon marquee sign "Esquire" still lightens up Oak Street, not only being a certain reference point , but also a strong reminder of the historic past of the street.

Prairie Avenue on Chicago's South Side was known as "The Fifth Avenue of the Midwest" and the home of the Who's Who of Chicago's Gilded Age, site of the mansions of farm equipment manufacturing executive John J. Glessner, railroad czar George Pullman, merchant king Marshall Field, meatpacking magnate Philip Armour, organ and piano manufacturer William Wallace Kimball and Union Stock Yards founder John Sherman. Prairie Avenue, which was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972 and designated a Historic District in 1978 and a Chicago Landmark in 1979, includes the 1800 and 1900 blocks of South Prairie, the 1800 block of South Indiana and 211-217 East Cullerton. It became the city's most fashionable residential area after the Great Fire of 1871. The best known building is noted architect H.H. Richardson's fortress-like Glessner House, built in 1885-1886 at 1800 South Prairie in Richardson's signature Romanesque style. It has been restored as a historic house museum and open for public tours, telling the story of Prairie Avenue and the Gilded Age. Also open to the public as a house museum is the Clarke House at 1827 South Indiana. Built in 1836 and untouched by the Great Fire of 1871, it is the oldest house in Chicago and a classic example of the Greek Revival style. It features 19th century furnishings depicting life on the urban frontier. Over the decades, factories, parking lots and warehouses replaced the grand mansions. Only seven still exist today.

The Pullman neighborhood is Chicago is a must. It is story of industry between 1880 and 1900 with beautiful restored homes. The coffee shop is a great place for breakfast. This is was a place with flush toilets when downtown Chicago had outhouses. It is well worth a 2-hour visit and the tours are wonderful.
