Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

What travellers are saying
- Matt VFort Wayne, IN96 contributionsThis place has a lot of hard to find pieces. The staff is very helpful and all prices are negotiable...think American Pickers. That said, items are still pricey even after the negotiation. You better come prepared with your wallet.Written 30 March 2017This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Taylor BChicago, IL8,479 contributionsWicker Park, by any standard, is one of the fastest rising and most enterprising of Chicago's neighborhoods. And the central hub of Wicker Park is the Flat Iron Arts Building. Located at 1579 North Milwaukee Avenue, at the busy intersection of Milwaukee, North Avenue and Damen Avenue, it was built in 1918 as an office building but was converted in the late 1960s to an all artist studio building, an artists colony that features visual art, musicians of all disciplines, tattoo shops, costume design, film-makers and other genres of art. It also is host to arts festivals, performances and open studio events. With its distinctive white and black terra cotta surface, it is the dominant feature of Wicker Park's main crossroads. And its rooftop deck offers visitors a splendid view of Chicago's skyline. If that isn't enough, every first Friday of the month artists open their studio doors to the pubic and the building is transformed into one big party scene.Written 7 October 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Ty ACambridge, MA307 contributionsI had heard of the Ukrainian Museum of Modern Art from a few of my friends who went during Open House Chicago last year. I’ve got to tell you….UMMA did not disappoint!
Some of the artwork there is incredible! One of the things that I found very surprising was the vast multicultural display of work that they had. One of the pieces that I found rather exquisite was this one exhibit that was a series of mirrors that were painted with numerous faces of different cultures and genders. It was absolutely beautiful! The colors were vivacious. The paint stokes told the story of intensity from the artist. It was really a treasure to see.
Then there were some other pieces that were basically , well, let’s just say “ up for interpretation.” Lol. One of them was the usual TV playing in the corner. I thought it was weird, but fascinating at the same time. The quintessential, modern art exhibit. Which gets me to my point. This is what you can expect when you go to the Ukrainian Museum of modern Art in Chicago. Definitely worth the time and visit. Highly recommended! Please see pictures for more! Definitely don’t sleep on UMMA!Written 17 October 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. It’s an absolutely beautiful and unique venue, and we got lucky with weather good enough to have our ceremony in their outdoor courtyard. They were generally flexible with us throughout two covid postponements as we were supposed to get married in 2020, then 2021, and finally 2022. One thing to be aware of is there is a company directly next door to the venue that rents their parking lot out for outdoor events, and we found out one week before our wedding date that they were planning to host an EDM concert with up to 1,000 people in attendance. Not exactly the news you want to hear that close to the wedding date, but we understand it’s not a normal occurrence for them, and typically their outdoor events are not that large or loud. In the end it wasn’t as bad as it could have been - the outdoor courtyard was shielded enough for us to still have our ceremony outside, and other than some windows rattling during the father of the bride speech, and having to find a last minute valet (which was very costly) it could have been worse. While we were hoping the venue would have been more flexible in working with us a bit more on this, they did end up helping to cover a small portion of the valet fee. We had hoped with the last minute issue coming up and all that we had on our plate in the final week, they could have done more in helping us secure a valet. One last note, we found out after the wedding that the front door was locked for a time during the ceremony while the mother of the bride was running to her car, and she was unable to get back into the venue for about a half hour, causing her to miss the first dance. Highly suggest either ensuring that the door does not get locked, or that a sign gets put up so that late guests have a way to enter if the door is locked. Overall, we are still happy we chose Salvage One. We had a few things happen that were less than ideal, but in the end we had a great wedding and reception and have some great pictures in this unique venue.Written 11 September 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Taylor BChicago, IL8,479 contributionsIn 1996, Dusty Groove opened for business as a part-time hobby run out of an apartment on Chicago's South Side. Its online business was an immediate success, becoming so popular that the company went full-time and hired its first employees. A year later, it established an office in the Wicker Park neighborhood. But business got bigger than ever, calling for more space. In 2001, Dusty Groove Chicago Record Store & Warehouse moved into its current corporate headquarters, a three-story building at 1120 North Ashland Avenue, at the corner of Haddon Street, one block south of Division Street. The store is open from 10 to 6 daily and the takeout window on the side of the store is open from 9 to 6 daily. Every item in the store is also simultaneously available online. But isn't it more fun to browse through the seemingly endless aisles of albums and used CDs and rare LPs, 12-inch singles, 45s and other vinyl recordings, from classic to jazz to country to bluegrass to rock 'n roll to hip hop, to find something you thought no longer existed? I got that same feeling when I discovered the famous musical score from the 26-episode Victory at Sea documentary series that was a smash hit on TV in 1952-1953. How good is Dusty Groove? In 2010, Rolling Stone magazine singled out Dusty Groove as the No. 3 record store in America. Enough said.Written 13 May 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Taylor BChicago, IL8,479 contributionsOver the years, my wife and I have purchased new, rare and first-edition books, autographs, original oil paintings and other historical documents and artifacts at Dan Weinberg's Abraham Lincoln Book Shop in Chicago. But an Ammonite Fossil? That's a first. "One of the oldest artifacts we've ever handled," Weinberg said. An ancestor of today's nautilus and other mollusks, this long-extinct cephalopod lived in the ocean during thee Jurassic era, about 200 million years ago. The shop was established in 1938 by Ralph Newman, who hoped to serve the passionate collecting needs of a small circle of friends devoted to the study of the Civil War and Abraham Lincoln. Weinberg entered into a partnership with Newman in 1971, then purchased Newman's interest in 1984 to become the sole proprietor. We met Weinberg at the original book store address on Chestnut Street near State Street in the 1970s, then followed him when he opened a new shop on West Chicago Avenue near Orleans, then again when he moved to his current address at 824 West Superior Street, west of Halsted and Division. It's a must-see for Civil War and Lincoln buffs, a museum where you can purchase a pardon signed by Lincoln and future President Andrew Johnson for $12,500 or a Civil War Ambulance Guidon for $12,500. A collection of eight signed photographs of Lincoln's cabinet recently sold for $115,000. We purchased an original oil painting of the battle of "The West Woods" at Antietam by well known Civil War artist Keith Rocco. The next day, the Mellon Library in Pittsburgh to offer to purchase our painting to pair with Rocco's sister painting of the battle of "The Cornfield" at Antietam. We still have our painting. When you buy something from Dan Weinberg's Abraham Lincoln Book Shop, you don't often part with it.Written 29 September 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - ZarkoffWestchester County, NY58 contributions55 years ago I walked into the Occult Bk Store. I was 15 and the gentleman said to the woman then that a young witch was at the counter. I was thrilled and bought some very esoteric books. I would go back to this good vibe place when i was in the city. I was always welcome. It turns out that I was not a witch but turned into a doctor eventually. I still like potions, unguents and the magic is actually vaccines, now etc. for me. They were so nce to a geeky kid then. They were so glamorous.
Recently, I remembered this and was surprised to see it is still around. I ordered some sprays and salts lately and they are delightful. The magic is partly conjuring those good memories then when I looked for answers to the universe. They are still so nice-sent me a personal note on how to use those magic salts. It brought a smile to me from an innocent time. Who says you can't time travel?Written 6 July 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. We had a great experience. I am a novice to jewelry making and my friend is way more experienced and we both had a great time making our charm necklaces. The staff was really friendly and explained everything to us with a lot of detail regarding the process of picking out charms, what kind of chain to get and how to measure our chains to fit. The store itself was well curated and easy to navigate. Everything was clearly labeled and priced accurately. Making custom charm jewelry may seem like something intimidating to those who haven’t done it before, but when you go here the staff makes the process very approachable and fun! This would be a perfect activity for something bridal, a Mother’s Day outing, or even just because. We had an excellent time, thank you!Written 6 May 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
