- ClevelandBillBay Village, OH49 contributionsWe rented kayaks for a two hour tour of the Key’s inner ecosystem. Kayaks were top quality recreational models (The Pungo!), paddles were graphite handles, PFDs with whistles (minimum required safety equipment) were issued. The boats displayed the Vessel Safety Check sticker of either the Coast Guard Auxiliary or Power Squadron. Safety is built in to their system.
The paddling, itself, was awesome. We saw sharks and manatee in the harbor - and a dozen or more other species of fish when we paddled the mangrove passages and backwaters. I have significant boating experience in the Chesapeake - but Key West is much more difficult to navigate and you can easily run aground. I got a bit concerned after seeing the sizeable boat and they offered to arrange a captain (at a very reasonable price) for the next morning. Unfortunately the weather was rough the next day so we had to cancel. From the initial call to advise an early show time to the detailed trip/navigation layout + too much to type. It felt like we were getting an additional service package on top of the boat rental for the same price.
