Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

- ShampeuNorthbrook, IL455 contributionsWe stopped by this park on our way from Arthur's Pass to Mt. Cook. It had breathtaking views and wonderful areas to climb and hike.Written 18 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Hailz_777Melbourne, Australia50 contributionsOne of the best experiences during our recent trip to NZ. Reviews i read prior made it sound like a spot worth checking out but the experience was amazing and far beyond either of our expectations; my husband and i had a ball. Freezing water and don't attempt without a headlight, good footwear and reasonable fitness. One not to be missedWritten 24 April 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Rosemary VRotorua, New Zealand72 contributionsOur family of 6 older adults enjoyed a half day here. Parking and WC at start of track with good signage. Mostly flat walk towards the rocks. Can choose challenging climbing, various levels of fitness catered for. Incredible rocks and vistas. Had a picnic lunch at the end. Easily spent several hours here. Good to see some people doing real climbing. Highly recommend a visit. Take layers sunhat and sunscreen for variable temperatures.Written 18 October 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - AcinetoAuckland Central, New Zealand23,879 contributionsThe drive to Mount Olympus is quite exciting. It goes through farmland and tracks up the side of the mountain. It is located on the other side of the mountain range fro the other club fields so the drive is a bit longer. You need to carry chains at all times if you are heading there. We hired out a high clearance 4WD which was fortunate as it was quite snowy when we went.
You first arrive at the bottom hut which also had some beds to stay in. You radio from the bottom hut to let them know you are heading up and they let you know what is needed to come up. We had to fit chains before driving up. Once at the carpark, we headed up to the shed to put on some tow belts. There is a sign to tell you where to collect tow belts. The belt is needed to get up the access rope tow.
The bottom tow is beside the shed. They were quite nice and gave us advice on how to use the tow since it was my first time. They stopped the line and it wasn't too hard getting up from there. At the top of the access rope tow, head up the beginner's tow to get to the top hut which doubles as a lodge. The hut is where you can grab a day pass. They accept chill pass clips here.
There are two other rope tows that take you to the top. They alternate on the side you get on which prevents getting too tired on one hand. You do need to flick and clip since you generally come at the tow while moving forward.
The snow was really soft and quite fluffy. Some areas of nice powder. There wasn't a piste run per se. It seems to be more for advanced riders with a lot of their trails along the face of the basin, great for free riders.
I was a beginner/intermediate skier so it was quite difficult for me. I am primarily a snowboarder so it might've been a different experience on a snowboard. The resort is fairly small but does have quite a wide area of riding, albeit it seems that some walking may be required to get there.
Overall it was a nice resort and it was nice being able to learn how to use a tow rope. It probably did;t help that I am not accustomed to deep powder and skiing but it was still an enjoyable experience. Probably worth the trip for the more advanced riders.Written 18 October 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. I have previously participated in Sofa Ski Camps in both New Zealand and Japan. Most recently, in August 2024, I was fortunate to do a double camp at Porters Ski Area in the beautiful Canterbury district of the South Island. All participants stayed in Oxford, in very comfortable motel accommodation and were transported each day to and from the ski field.
I found Porters Ski Area to be ideal for for learning to improve ski technique. The small skier numbers made for easy access to all lifts with virtually no waiting, and this allowed for multiple laps to reinforce the aspects of skiing we were working on. The bonus was the cafe associated with the ski area which had a good variety of food and excellent coffee !
However, without a doubt the most valuable aspect of the Sofa Ski Camps is the quality of the coaches. Both Klaus and Hans are extremely experienced coaches who are dedicated to improving their clients skiing. They provide valuable feedback with the use of on-hill Bluetooth earpieces and detailed video analysis which can be accessed for ongoing review via your personalised training diary.
I have absolutely no reservations about recommending the Sofa Ski Camps to any skier (intermediate and above) looking to take their skiing to the next level.Written 13 October 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
