What travellers are saying
- permiaIreland40,931 contributionsA natural entrance to the city is reflected in the impressive longevity of antecedent defences on the site.
Beginning in the 14th century BCE; but it was really the Carthaginians in the latter half of the 3rd century BCE that started the bastion we admire today.
Romans, Muslims and Christians all subsequently interceded in and modified the fortress gate. A fabulous legacy for the city.
At the topmost levels splendid vistas across the white cityscapes are to be gazed upon.Written 17 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. For people who like roman history or just interested in necropolis. Easy to visit, a pity we cannot go down the tumbsWritten 29 October 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Benna PRothwell, UK184 contributionsWell preserved Roman gates for entry to Carmona.
Excellent views from the gates looking out.
Unfortunately everything was a bit run down and there was a lot of litter around. There weren't any visitors due to coronavirus.
Generally it's difficult to find places in Carmona due to narrow one way streets and not is signposted. Walking around is almost impossible due Carmona being on a hillside.Written 2 June 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - seanmcbride51Glasgow, UK70 contributionsI did a Distillery Tour and tasting at Puerto de Indias. I tried the signature Strawberry Gin (world's first gin flavoured with fresh fruit)
The distillery is a quirky, arty experience. You get to see the story of Puerto de Indias Gin in pictures and text. You can also take in the scent of all the botanicals that make up the gin.
We then went the Tasting Room and made our own Gin.
The staff were informative and friendly, the atmosphere of the place and the gin itself were amazing. A fantastic way to spend a day and an amazing drink to remember it by.Written 20 October 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The free A5 size town map is useful as it identifies all the main sites (you can also follow the round tourist signs planted in the road as you walk round). Rear of tourist office is where you gain access to the historical gate (Alcazar) for a nominal 2euro per person fee which I thought good value.Written 10 January 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Alex FThe Villages, FL1,483 contributionsStrange to see an active convent this days, even more see active nuns working. The church in the Convento is beautifully decorated and well maintained.Written 29 October 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - permiaIreland40,931 contributionsSurprised and a tad disappointed that the amphitheatre not open. Seemingly because it was a weekday visit.
Nevertheless the Necropolis was engaging. With a cogent outline and descriptions of the numerous tombs, it was an absorbing walk around the delineated site.Written 6 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - NilindyGlasgow, UK1,138 contributionsWe visited Carmona when the coronavirus pandemic was gaining momentum and several sites were already closed. We were staying in the Parador within the Alcazar and walked round it while attempting to visit local sites. Alas the others were closed.
We were, however, able to take in the splendour of the Alcazar and its location and, despite its decay, get an impression of its strategic significance. Restoration and modification at the Parador is exemplary.Written 14 April 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. There are large displays of Roman remains and plenty of information in Spanish. There is also local art. All this in an attractive historic building. - Kevin SPontypridd, UK6,253 contributionsJust an ordinary town centre plaza like many in Spain. Quiet in the afternoon with each of the restaurants with maybe one or two tables occupied, nothing special. But on Saturday night it seemed every family and group of teenagers was dressed up for a night socialising in the plaza. A lovely friendly busy place.Written 8 October 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
