Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

What travellers are saying
- 2006TravelBugVancouver, Canada367 contributionsMore than likely, unless you are just here for diving, then you have come to witness the fascinating stone money of Yap. I was surprised to see so much of it scattered around the entire island. I was just expecting a couple of money banks, but these fascinating stone money pieces are everywhere. Rent a car or arrange a driver to take you around. A driver is smarter as you need permission to access private land throughout Yap. Some of the money banks are immense, with some really grand money pieces. Do your homework and read up about the money and it’s importance.Written 28 December 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - thelonious22Seongnam4,383 contributionsThere were a number of World War II sights that included a F4F Hellcat fighter aircraft and Japanese anti-aircraft guns in Colonia, and a Japanese Nakajima B5N Torpedo Bomber near the old airport in Rull...lot of them have good explanations about the aircraft and the history. Like open air exhibits scattered across the island.Written 27 March 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - MyPetRabbitBoston, MA61 contributionsJust wanted to second ridgetop1's comment about the gothic archway - I'm not sure where it's from, but it's definitely not Yap. There are a number of reasons to visit the island - diving (the reason for many if not most tourist visits), the local culture (traditional clothing is not uncommon), relaxation (Type A's will quickly run out of things to do) - but gothic architecture is not one of them.Written 23 March 2015This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - MyPetRabbitBoston, MA61 contributionsThis is the only 'art gallery' in Yap and one of the only places to buy artwork (the Coop and a couple of stores have T-shirts, and may have other works on occasion). It may not seem like much, but one needs to remember that you are in a remote and little-populated island in the north Pacific where many people still rely on subsistence fishing and farming for most of their food production. That said, there are some talented local artists and many of the pieces, even down to smaller handmade cards, are unique. The Yapese versions of Christmas and other religious scenes are especially beautiful and make wonderful gifts. Everything is inexpensive by U.S. standards and there are a variety of items at each price point. If no one is there when you visit, leave a note and they'll contact you. It's worth a return visit to see the only art gallery for several hundred miles, plus its location just outside tiny Colonia means you will be passing every day anyway.Written 23 March 2015This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Mike VQuezon City, Philippines143 contributionsits actually just a bridge not an attraction... but offers the best view of the bay.... best is to walk around the blue lagoon (about 2km walk)... to better appreciate the bay and it surroundings and peopleWritten 16 November 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - James CFairbanks, AK98 contributionsThis is the Evangelical Church on Lagoon Dr on Yap State (island) Federated States of Micronesia. There is a map related to this that actually shows Kolonia, Phonpei which is a different city and island but also part of Federated States The Services are held Sunday day and evening but you may wish to check in advance where as the church also runs a school at the base of this hill and may hold services there or at another church if the pastor (Ruda) is filling in. Services and hymns are performed in both English and local dialect. The pastors house is directly left of this building but not quite so high up. The church also has a large apartment that is made available for a donation for visiting workers but they do not stress this housing as they do not wish to be seen as competing with local hotels. One demonstration, in my opinion of the sincerity of the pastor's convictions and service in addition to holding services in the outlying villages for person not able to come in.Written 22 June 2017This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - traveling_sunAustin, TX228 contributionsI visited Yap a few yeas ago and sort of stumbled on this place with the help of Lonely Planet. It is located inside a swank hotel, out of place for Yap, and houses the most extraordinary collect of indigenous arts and crafts. Locals are taught to use materials and techniques used by their ancestors, so the stuff is the real thing not for tourist alone. The Institute is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the local art ways. It's definitely worth a visit even if you aren't shopping for art. If you are, it's all for sale.Written 10 June 2012This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- angel huntTumon, Mariana Islands135 contributionsMy husband and I went to Yap for a dive trip during MantaFest in September. We went diving for 5 days with Beyond the Reef and had a great experience.
First of all, email communication with their office staff (Lyzanne is her name) was quick. She answered my questions promptly with helpful details before I made my decision to choose between Yap Diver and Beyond the Reef.
Our boat captain and dive guide was Brian for our entire trip. He had a young assistant Merson. They took care of us on the boat and cleaned our gear and wetsuits at the end of the day. Brian is very knowledgeable. Their boat can carry up to four divers but my husband and I were the only two customers for the whole trip ( 5 days). Brian helped us find mantas at Goofnow channel. We took some awesome pictures during this trip.
We were very happy with Beyond the Reef and we would recommend to anyone who comes to Yap for a good diving experience.Written 11 September 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. It appears this may have gone out of business and been abandoned. The cottages and nearby buildings are in bad shape so I certainly wouldn't stay in them. The beach area is lovely.Written 23 December 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
