Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

What travellers are saying
- I visited this place🇺🇸🇫🇷🇳🇱🇬🇧🇨🇭Israel36,570 contributionsPROS
* Amazing and fantastic; incredible and impressive natural wonder of the world
* Breathtaking panoramic 360 degree scenic views to the horizon- kilometers upon kilometers of desert expanse.
* Primordial desert experience
* Magnificent hiking and camping and jeep etc outdoor exciting activities
* Small town of Mitzpe Ramon situated on the cliff of the crater provides essential services
CONS
* The sheer size is hard to absorb and process
* Beware of the sudden precipitous straight vertical cliff drop of well over 100 meters
* No shade sun or weather protection at all
"I VISITED THIS PLACE"...
... when driving from the north to Eilat. Route 40 traverses the Negev Desert from Beersheva and arrives at Mitzpe Ramon. I insisted that we stop at two lookouts- the Hanging Balcony and the Barak and Amichay Lookout. Both are incredible and essential stops (read my "helpful" 👍 reviews and see my "helpful" photos 📷).
Since we needed to get to Eilat, our visit was quite short, so we didn't ahve any time to do the hiking that I love and crave. We proceeded and continued our drive through the other-worldly 40+ kilometer excursion directly through the desert lunar-like landscape.

WOULD "I VISIT THIS PLACE AGAIN"?
Yes
ADVICE
* This is an essential destination for the tourist- the crater is magnificent- a true natural wonder of the world- and not well enough known outside of Israel. It is a natural phenomena not to be missed when visiting Israel.
* It's best to stop in the little town and continue a two minute walk in the southern direction- but be CAREFUL. Totally unexpected, one comes to a sudden precipitous straight vertical cliff of well over 100 meters, and the expanse of the crater is suddenly revealed- kilometers upon kilometers of desert expanse.
* Be sure to note the colors of the sky during sunrise and sunset.
* Look for the ibex mountain goats wandering in town.
* Take advantage of the myriad outdoor activities- hiking on your own, guided tours, jeep tours, rapelling etc
* Most important- sun protection: hats and sun scream lotion!! And water- liters of water!!

Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews. - ErikCarlsonLondon, UK99 contributionsWe spent a few hours exploring the ruins. The visitors centre was great, the lady was friendly and spoke good English. She put on a movie about the site in English and gave lots of helpful advice.
We only had time to see the ruins which are set across quite a wide area. Well signed and accessible. Very hot, bring all your water!
As well as the history there are some amazing views. A few hours only allowed us to see the ruins. I would return and allow a day do the surrounding national park area too.
Good facilities, easy to park.Written 19 September 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Gbass12Baltimore, MD5 contributionsNana has a relaxed vibe in a beautiful spot. We were among a small number of people on site for an afternoon tasting on a weekday, and we had plenty of space and time to enjoy the grounds and learn about the wine. The staff was friendly and helpful as well. The location is a but out of the way, but easily accessible from Mitzpe Ramon.Written 22 May 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Eli GRamat Gan, Israel503 contributionsWe took the route in the afternoon. The views are unique and the road is very convenient. All the route is extremely well planned and designed for un-guided trips. We highly recommend itWritten 18 December 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Mile-EndersLondon, UK169 contributionsStopped on way from Mitzpe Ramon to Eilat. Picnic under a thorn tree in the wadi followed by a hike up the gorge to the top of the plateau.
Wild landscape and narrow track through sandstone cliffs. Sometimes only a few inches wider than a person! Including a couple of ladders through the rougher parts.
Views from the top are fab. Take plenty of water and good shoes/stout sandals.
Kids loved it. Paths really well marked. Good info on this and other hikes on Negev Trails website
At the wadi paran roadsign take the left hand track and keep on it for around 4km until you see a turning to the L. A few 100m away is a parking area by a sign at the entrance to the canyon.

* Magnificent majestic amazing panoramic 360 degree view of sprawling empty desert landscape (see my very few "helpful" 👍 photos 📷)
* Free and unfettered access 24/7
* Less than five minutes from the main Beersheva- Eilat highway #40
CONS
* It can be scary and traumatic, especially if one looks straight down
* Unsupervised
"I VISITED THIS PLACE"...
... because it was the one place that i definitely wanted to visit on our virtually non stop drive from the north of the country towards Eilat. I had been here many times in many previous years, and I wanted to record the views and to post a review on tripadvisor (yes, I am THAT addicted). Mrs. Place of course does not know of my tripadvisor obsession and was annoyed at the extremely brief detour.
We turned off the road where the little shopping center is and we drove to the farthest left turn before the water tower. Then we went past the brick re-creation duplicate full size model of the 770 Eastern Parkway Brooklyn Chabad building and then a left at the end of the street and it's clearly and evidently on the right.
Mrs. Place stayed in the car as I went for my visit- probably the 10th time that I had been there. There were a few other people at midday. The views were, as always, phenomenal.

* Not for very faint-hearted- do not look done if that's the case
* Despite the fact that the balcony is super sturdy and strong, do not jump or be wild on it
* For goodness sakes, do NOT throw anything off the ledge, especially automobiles
* Be aware that friendly ibex may visit, looking for foodWritten 12 May 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews. - I visited this place🇺🇸🇫🇷🇳🇱🇬🇧🇨🇭Israel36,570 contributionsPROS
* Very good turnoff of the highway giving outstanding epic views of the crater
* See the incredibly winding descent as the road turns and twists on many switchbacks and then enters the crater
* See visitors and tourists rapelling down from the visotr center at the top and then the steep deep cliff
CONS
* It can only be accessed in the southern direction of route 40 as it leaves the town of Mitzpe Ramon
* It is immediately after passing the bridge going to the Beresheet Hotel and can be easily missed
* It is a narrow steep turnover
* The parking area holds up to five cars in a row in a narrow space
* Children and people are always in the way of the cars stopped and parked at the lookout
* Too easy access for careless adults or unattended and unsupervised children to wander into the street!
"I VISITED THIS PLACE"...
... because I know that it is there and I stop every time that I am on that road. The view of the premordial expansive desert crater has not changed at all since the first time that I saw it 30+ years ago. I enjoyed my brief experience and seeing the epic view very much. Of course there were other not quiet and not sedate and not serene tourists, some of whom placed stickers on the structures and one who left his coffee cup (see my few "helpful" 👍 photos 📷). Full disclosure: Mrs. Place did not get out of the ir conditioned car... again.
