- Stay1064038791511 contributionsIf you want to have a feel of traditional Portuguese architecture I India, Fontainhas is the right place. My niece has special interest in architecture. She only advised to visit the place. We see here a number of colourful houses beautifully lined up in the locality. The best part is the cleanliness of the entire area.Written 22 February 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Maria Matos SequeiraPlymouth, UK914 contributionsSituated on a small hill with its white facade and the grand staircase with symmetrical steps leading up to the church entrance add to its majestic appearance.
The interior of the church and altar are equally impressive.
The annual Feast of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception is celebrated on 8th December and is a wonderful way to immerse yourself in the rich cultural and spiritual heritage of Panjim.
The nine days leading up to the feast are marked by novenas, a fair, and a spectacular fireworks display.
Whilst in Panjim, a visit to the colourful neighbourhood of Fontainhas is a must-see, also known as the Latin Quarter of Goa and
Altinho, Panjim market , Miramar Beach and Kadamba Bus Stand are all within walking distance or just a short rickshaw ride away.Written 30 January 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Went for the sunset and enjoyed it as did all the locals, boat tours also leave from the beach.
If staying close by check out the sunset, but wouldn’t go out of my way to get to beach.Written 3 January 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Place is serene, like Palolem 5 years ago.
Restaurants are a bit more expensive compared to Palolem but if you want to chill in a quiet clean beach with emerald green water, this is the place!
Wave would be stronger than Palolem but life guards are there so it is safe to swim.Written 1 January 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. It's the largest church in Asia, measuring over 76m long and 55m wide. Construction began in 1562 and was completed in 1619 after many interruptions. The exterior is plain but demonstrates great workmanship and stunning Renaissance architecture in the Tuscan style. The single tower houses the “golden bell”, the largest in Goa and one of the world’s best. Inside are Corinthian columns as well as high ceilings, sacred artifacts, religious symbols and impressive paintings in rich detail. The Chapel of the Cross of Miracles is where a vision of Christ is said to have appeared in 1619. The church also houses a 1532 baptismal font used by Saint Francis Xavier in order to baptise Goan converts. The altar has gilded reredos above it and complimented by 6 main panels whose carvings depict scenes of the life of Saint Catherine It has been declared an UNESCO World Heritage Site and justifiably so.Written 5 February 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - AMsaysThornhill, Canada5,300 contributionsThe Reis Magos Fort, a heritage site in Goa and an UNESCO World Heritage Site was built by the Portuguese in 1551 after defeating the incumbent ruler, Adil Shah of Bijapur. The fort modified and reconstructed many times since, was an essential shield against the Maratha Empire. After the British occupied post 1798, it became a prison. Restored in 2008, it remains a historical site worth discovering. The courtyard has St. Anthony Chapel and a well. The first floor has a large hall, barracks, kitchens, and stores, whilst the second floor gives rise to stunning views of the Arabian Sea. Visiting the fort allows you a glimpse into Goa's colonial past with its well-preserved architecture, sturdy walls, bastions and watchtowers. There are some informative displays and various paraphernalia to see. A warning though, there are steep inclines to get to . - Manasa MuraliMumbai, India1,193 contributionsLike the namesake of the Goddess, the temple is also situated in serene location. With a splendid architecture, the temple sits in a very tranquil environment. There is also an availability of dorm rooms for devotees/travellers. The Goddess herself is beautiful and peaceful to gaze upon. Her facade if that of happiness and calm. A rich history about how the goddess came to be in this part of Goa is available to read in the temple's website.Written 9 January 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Sunil DMumbai, India190 contributionsGreat experience right down from putting your car into a ferry and disembarking on the island to the laid back lanes and good eating joints , not to mention the beautiful , beautiful old portuguese influence houses and villas ... really good . We did visit an old Ganesh temple and a church in this island and although the church was under renovation , was a really good place to just amble aimlessly while soaking in the architecture and quiet.Written 2 December 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Raja BhaduryCupertino, CA10 contributionsThis is a hidden gem for those who enjoy birding and nature. During our two hour boat ride through the mangrove swamps with Mr. Uday, we saw over 20 species of birds. With more attention from forest officials, and draconian measures to prevent residents from dumping trash everywhere, this could become a more rewarding birding hotspot and a fitting tribute to Dr. Salim Ali, India’s great ornithologist.
Here’s what I liked about our visit to this park: It is convenient to access as it is close to Panjim (and about 30 minutes away from the Baga beach area if you leave early around 6 AM). There are very frequent (and free) ferries that help you cross from Ribander to the island in which this sanctuary is located. I had previously made arrangements with Mr. Uday who met us at the ferry drop off point, and drove us a short distance to his boat. During the two-hour boat ride between 7 to 9 AM with him, we saw numerous birds - very large numbers of Black-headed ibis, Brahmini kites, and various egret species. The boat ride through the serene setting with the lush mangrove forests was very enjoyable.
There is a lot of room for improvement though. The fees for entry to the park were not clearly listed and I was surprised to find that they do not accept cash payments for ticket entry. Unfortunately, my US credit card did not work there (although it was accepted for transactions everywhere else in Goa). Fortunately, I was able to pay Rs. 750 (for two adult tickets and a camera) to Mr. Uday, who then paid for my entry using his credit card.
Also, I would’ve like to see brochures or signs that introduce tourists to the park, its ecosystem and birds. But worst of all is the trash. This sanctuary is in an island that is quite densely populated. As a result, there a piles of plastic bottles and trash bags everywhere. I was horrified to see people openly dumping trash into the back waters near the mangrove swamps. I’m assuming there are garbage collection facilities for residents on this island and therefore there is simply no excuse for this kind of behavior.Written 26 November 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
