Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

What travellers are saying
- JosuéSao Paulo, SP23 contributionsBest way to get there was by boat, which cost about 70 reais from Abraão to Pouso beach. It's also one of the easiest destinations to go, considering the amount of companies offering this route. Between Pouso and Lopes Mendes, there's a short hike of about 30 minutes, nothing too complicated but it's part uphill and part downhill, so keep an eye out for some mud spots that can make the path more slippery. It doesn't demand any hiking gear or anything. The beach itself is beautiful and wasn't considered one of Brazil's most beautiful for nothing. Even so, expect minimal infrastructure, only trees as protection from the sun, and close to zero cellphone network coverage. The only person selling drinks and food there struggled to make the card machine work so it's wise to take some cash to pay for stuff. The sea is quite aggressive on the area we arrive in but gets better in the other end, even making up a great snorkeling spot with some marine life to see. Walking there is another 40 minutes or something but it's quite worth it, with an old buoy washed ashore and an abandoned church in the way.Written 29 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Simon FLausanne, Switzerland12 contributionsI did the climb in December 2025 without a guide. As a trail runner who lives in the Alps I was not afraid of it being technical or losing the path (I had the Strava track too). I left at 9:00 a.m. and covered the first kilometer up to the turning into the forest relatively quickly. This covers about the first 150 M of the 1,000 M of altitude.
That's the signpost turning right into the jungle track, it gets steep pretty quickly and the next 800 altitude metres and 4 km are relatively demanding with lots of stepping over rocks across tree roots, and on some relatively slippery areas. All attempts to run this section were quickly abandoned, as the heat was a limiting factor for someone who had relatively recently arrived from a European winter.
Route finding for the last 150 m is a little challenging and I needed to look at the Strava track once or twice. It took me around 2 hours from the town to the top. I think the advertised three and a half hours is pretty slow going and most people would do it somewhere between 2 hours 45 minutes and 3 hours. The view from the top makes it all worthwhile and the descent was more straightforward then I expected, given the ascent.
I did see one snake on the way back down near the exit back onto the road. It scared the life out of me and moved incredibly fast off into the forest.Written 21 December 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Alessandra AlliRio de Janeiro, RJ45 contributionsThis is a place you must visit if you are in the island.
The access is by hiking 2,30hrs on a wide road of soil and rocks, from Vila do Abraão.
If you are lucky and the ocean is calm you may find a boat to take you back to Abraão, otherwise you will have to hike back.
But its worth every step. The left side of the beach has a cristal clear water river that ends in the white sands of the shore.
You also have the prison ruins and a museum that is good to visit

- amelier662 contributionsSuch an amazing experience! We went as a group of friends for sunrise and were joined by a few travelers. Our guide Júnior was very kind and spoke excellent English. His calm energy really set the tone for a beautiful time on the water. Rowing as a group felt great, we had plenty time to chill in the ocean as the sun was rising and the views throughout were incredible. Probably one of the best experiences I’ve tried in my trip through South America.Written 10 March 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Vanessa d22 contributionsMy husband and I embarked on a guided 15-miles trail to Lopes Mendes Beach, which is considered the second most beautiful beach in the world. When we arrived, it truly lived up to its reputation—it was breathtaking. Our guide, Hans, speak English very well He was fantastic at explaining everything about Big Island/ Rio de Janeiro / Angra dos Reis City. We had such a great time together, and the experience was absolutely worth it. It was so much fun, and I can’t wait to go back next year!Written 20 January 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
