Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

If you like very crowded places, this one is for you! It is a once in a lifetime experience. I'm glad we went, but won't go back. Foreigners have to pay a small entry fee.

We had a thoroughly entertaining encounter with an older gentleman (looks to be of Indian origin); who will tell you an interesting story about himself and his life. I won’t share his story, because I think it would be more entertaining to hear it from him; and for you to draw your own conclusions ;)

His name is Mr Slim. You don’t need to find him, he’ll find you. (He found us near the up-riding escalators, and I’m sure we looked a little lost and bewildered ).

If you’re looking to buy some souvenirs, he’ll help. We were looking for some shirts for my Dad and he took us to a store selling shirts. When we couldn’t find what we wanted (this market is really not for tourists) he then politely asked if he could take us to his “other” store. As we had read what the previous reviewer (Gari K) had said, we were prepared, and happily followed him to his store. He started pulling out trinket after trinket, and also pointing out to us his various wares - handicraft that came from the villages. They were “unpolished” and not fancy; and he didn’t appear to have more than one item of any one thing. we therefore felt that they could actually be quite authentic; and not items that were mass produced from some factory. We ended up buying some items from him.

What I love about all my encounters with salespeople in Myanmar is that even if they appear a little shady, they don’t do the hard sell on you.

So if you’re looking for a little adventure in the market; he’s your man!

Ps. If you’re looking for jade and find the Jade market overwhelming, go to ‘Moe gems and jewellery’. Look for my review on this.

Compared to Junction City and Sule Square malls in Yangon, this one is average. Maybe the market of middle class and upmarket shoppers is just very small in Mandalay. You get the feeling Yatanar is struggling to survive. Many shops further away from the moving staircases are empty.

Anyway there are some restaurants on the top floor (Korean food and a donut place) as well as a playground for kids. Many shops selling clothes, shoes, bags on level 2 and 3 and on the ground floor jewellery. In the basement there is an Ocean supermarket with Dutch cheese and other imported stuff (chocolate). Perhaps this mall is okay if you live in Mandalay.

What a great experience. This shop is legitimate and honest, no switching of gems with cheaper gems. In fact, some of my gems weren’t sparkling enough so they were replaced with higher quality gems from her own private collection. She takes such pride in her work! She has a large jewelery selection but she can also custom make your designs. She can use your loose stones that you bring or buy loose stones from her and create you own unique designs. I trust her 100%. This place is real! Call to make an appointment. She responds immediately and will work around your schedule. It was the best place that I found in Mandalay the 4 years that I lived there!

I was keen to see one of the gold leaf workshops during my visit to Myanmar. It was FREE, informative and worth the 15 or so minutes we spent there.
We bought some of the small gold leaf packs as presents for friends and family back home. My friend traveling with me actually added a piece of gold leaf at one of the temples during our stay. I wish I had done the same.
The work seemed to be very physical. I could not imagine doing that for 30mins. They do it for a living.
Much has been written about the prices at the store. You will always find some places with better prices. Think of the cheap souvenirs you can buy at home for your own country...
I bought some items as I wanted to support the business. The quality of the products seemed better than cheaper lookalikes we had seen in markets. I would like to think the products they sold were made with the gold leaf produced at the workshop.

I was interested in purchasing some quality tapestries and sought out this workshop. There is plenty of choice and some lovely pieces, unfortunately the artist that the other reviewers have mentioned was not in, so although we looked at the gallery and museum, we did not have anyone able to explain anything to us. We did purchase a few tapestry pieces which I am sure we will treasure for a long time. Please note they do not accept credit cards.

One of many rows of carving workshops in the area. Has a huge collection of carved statues, puppets and wall mounts. Worth checking out and walking through

Mr Slim sells unusual souvenirs. I.especially liked the bronzes he buys from the Naga tribes up north. The prices are reasonable and negotiable. Mr Slim enjoys a chat and he is a charming and cultured man with excellent English.
