Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

What travellers are saying
- aniquek2017Cape Town, South Africa62 contributionsWe visited the fort while it was under renovation and the facade was covered in scaffolding. There was still a lot to see and you can go up all three levels of the main building and explore all the little nooks and crannies. The view is great and you can see the site of the old lighthouse from the parapets. We wanted to stay for sunset, but they asked us to leave at 19:15. There are some nice restaurants nearby.Written 23 July 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- aniquek2017Cape Town, South Africa62 contributionsThe catacombs are very cool because of the way they blend Greek, Roman and Ancient Egyptian influences. We visited when we had already been in Egypt for over two weeks and had seen many of the major sites - yet, the catacombs still had something new to offer. They are deep in a local neighbourhood and we really struggled to find an Uber when we needed to leave. Luckily a couple who were there with a guide offered us a lift! Apparently it’s not a good idea for tourists to walk in the surrounding area.Written 23 July 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Rajesh K KBengaluru, India1,330 contributionsWe stopped here to take pics only - did not get to do much exploring. But the road looked lovely! One side had shops/restaurants and the other had the Mediterranean Sea! One can also see the Citadel at Qaitbay in the distance!
Would have loved to visit in the evening and walk around.Written 4 November 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. We saw it from our tour bus, pointed out by our guide. Did not go in but we were impressed with the beauty.Written 7 May 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Thomas VOakland, CA17,517 contributionsThis is the biggest site of ruins in the city. It's extensive and includes an open theater that is still used for concerts. There are ruins of shops and houses, including an area where some very good mosaics are no display. Also some monuments that have been extracted from the sea. Big area so you won't feel crowded.Written 7 May 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.

- cdandoyGilbert, AZ1,257 contributionsStopped by here to see the pillar. Had a local guide explain it to me. You can walk around it but not tons to see. It is in great shape.Written 12 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Thomas VOakland, CA17,517 contributionsThe city's biggest and most historic mosque, set on an open square so you can get a good view. We saw it from our tour bus, passed by too quickly, but it was magnificent, one of the most important sites in town.Written 7 May 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Thomas VOakland, CA17,517 contributionsWell you know the lighthouse no longer exists. It tumbled down in an earthquake during the 14th Century. It was eventually replaced by the fort at the same site, as well as an expanded harber.Written 7 May 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - smvNYCNew York City, NY363 contributionsThe monastery is located some distance from Alexandria and getting there was an adventure in itself Google Maps was surprisingly good).
The site is of significant importance to Christians as it hosts the relics of St. Minas. The place was busy with local tour groups. There is no entrance fee and the grounds were decorated with beautiful paintings and mosaics. There are also vendor booths with both religious items and local foods.Written 28 August 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. We did not go in, but our tour guide showed it to us and emphasized its importance.Written 7 May 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Kumi MPalo Alto, CA1,481 contributionsIf you visit the Sarapeum, you will see Pompey's Pillar. If you visit Pompey's Pillar, you will be in the Sarapeum. It's pretty much all in the same location.
This spot housed a large temple with views of land and sea. Eventually it was destroyed - some blame Roman soldiers, others blame a mob of Christians.
Below there are catacombs but I never saw it. As you walk around the complex toward the pillar, there will be areas with ruins and relics to look at. It doesn't take much time at all to walk through the artifact garden. It's nice to walk through and take the time to look at the modern buildings creeping up around you.
You don't really need a guided tour of this location, but a little bit of background information helps. It's a fast visit and won't take up much of your time.Written 15 January 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Constructed in 1948 one hundred years after his death.
The design of this fine mosque is by Italian architect Mario Rossi and shows blending of Mamluk and Ottoman styles. Note the elegant minaret has a clock in the middle part.Written 18 April 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. It was well worth going down into the tombs and seeing the intricate architecture below. Definitely try to make it here while you're in Alexandria!Written 20 August 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Robert ORotterdam, The Netherlands5,732 contributionsThis cathedral is the center of the Roman Catholic community in Alexandria currently very much involved in supporting refugees and migrants.
The neo-Baroque style building dates from the 1850s. The impressive facade was added in 1927. The cathedral is dedicated to Catherine of Alexandria, according to legend a princess who lived in the fourth century AD, converted to Christianity and eventually was executed by the Roman rulers.
Not only the peaceful setting is pleasant, but the beautifully decorated interior of the church as well.
The body of Italian king Victor Emmanuel III is not longer buried here, but was repatriated to Italy in 2017.Written 26 April 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
