What travellers are saying
- Antoni WKrakow, Poland124 contributionsCity center, within the ancient walls of a Palace. Filled with restaurants cafés souvenirs shops, overlooking the harbour. Great place to visit lovely for a walk, a meal, or to sit and relax near the see. Highly recommended to visit and see the blend of medieval Croatia and ancient roman influences.Written 21 February 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Antoni WKrakow, Poland124 contributionsGorgeous park! Located on a hill great for a walk or stroll with amazing views of the split, as well as the see. Very well organised with many interesting churches a zoo and a botanic garden. With some attractions for children and animal friendly. On the shore filled with beaches perfect to sunbathe and swim.Written 21 February 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - LittleALJOStockholm, Sweden617 contributionsWalking around in the old city are very nice, there are a lot to discover and see. But it is crowded even if we was there late in the season. But it is worth a visit for sure!Written 2 November 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- tinaNtravelSan Jose, CA2,011 contributionsFor 15 euros you can purchase one ticket for the Cathedral, Crypt, Baptistery, Treasury and the Bell Tower. The Cathedral is beautiful with some beautiful gold angels and the Tabernacle above and behind the altar. The marble altar is also quite stunning. There are other beautiful sculptures and paintings in the Cathedral as well. Apparently, this is the oldest Catholic Cathedral in the world that remains in use, in its original structure, that has not undergone recent renovations. That alone makes it worth the visit.Written 17 January 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Tommy599Two Rivers, WI874 contributions• Split has a population of 161,000, and June / July / August the town is very crowded with tourists.
• There are no cruise ships in port today, but just last week there was one of those gigantic ships that disembarked 6,000 tourists into the city (overwhelming the small streets around the Diocletian palace area).
• The Roman Emperor Diocletian at the turn of the Fourth Century, commissioned the building of a 5-mile aqua dike (fresh water supply) to a small (at the time) seaside community of Split.
• Next came his summer palace in 300 AD (took 10 years to complete), expanding out within defendable town walls that encompassed the entire town (at the time).
• The city had four heavenly diffable city gates.
• Diocletian (born near Split in today’s Croatia providence of Dalmatian = (just across the Adriatic Sea from Italy), was a Roman General, that became Emperor in 284 AD (after he murdered the Roman Prefect Aper).
• Diocletian ruled for 21 years and then unexcitedly abdicated and retired to his palace that he had built, where he eventually died, he was entombed in a LARGE mausoleum near his royal apartment in the palace.
• They say this palace is the greatest Roman ruin in Southeastern Europe.
• Split grew up around the palace to incorporating ancient heritage with the new, both inside and outside the city wall.
• Built like a fortress with walls 590 feet by 705 feet, the palace was occupied by the Emperor Diocletian from AD 300-313.
Diocletian’s Mausoleum were eventually turned into a Christian church dedicated to the seventh century martyr St. Domnius .
The entire old section of Split, with the palace as its centerpiece, is a virtual open-air museum with the city's contemporary life.
If you watched the Netflix series Game of Thrones (and we did), many of the locations within this city and Diocletian's Temple of Jupiter were used as backdrop in the production! Tom may now have to revisit the series (Game of Thrones), to better relate to many of the locations in the movie that match our experience walking through the palace!Written 27 November 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. This was so immersive, like being in ancient times! It really helped us picture what the palace would have been like to live in and how it would have looked, can’t recommend it enough!Written 27 October 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. We loved the Riva promenade with all the hustle and bustle and great bars and restaurants. It was lovely sitting there enjoying the food and drink with great views over the harbour and old town.
The is so much to do and see we will need to return as we didnt have enough time to do everything.
We walked to The Marjan hills , all of the beaches as the weather was fabulous , the Bell tower , the old town and harbour and then the Diocletian palace and all the fabulous squares.
Looking forward to returning to finish off seeing the rest of SplitWritten 26 October 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. There's a small museum type area in one of the rooms that details the hundreds of years of history of the fortress, which was really interesting to learn about. The only complaint I had was the lack of signage. Yes, there was a detailed history of the fortress in general, but as we walked around I wondered what specific rooms and area of the fortress were specifically for. That's information that I've been able to find easily at other castles/fortifications that I've visited. That being said though, I think this is a must-see place if you're in Split. Aside from the history, the view from the top is beautiful.Written 9 December 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - tinaNtravelSan Jose, CA2,011 contributionsThis is a large iconic bronze statue outside the Golden Gate where a number of the walking tours start. It is also a nice place to walk around with a park and a small waterfall in the wall where you can kneel down on one side and your friends/family on the other and take a few pictures through the waterfall. The statue and surrounding area are worth a quick visit.Written 17 January 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - AQ1975Newcastle upon Tyne, UK83 contributionsWe were lucky enough to go at the end of the season so there were only 4 people on our tour. It began with a bottle of rose on their veranda with gorgeous views over the bay. This followed a talk and tour from the family. Followed with red wine tasting and snacks in their bar. Very good value for money and heavy pours at the wine tasting itself.Written 10 January 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
