My trip to the Visitor Center was a letdown as it consisted of a film and a viewing platform at the Miraflores lock where I saw no ships. This museum is packed with information about all kinds of aspects of the canal with photographs, documents, maps, films, taped recollections. It was a moderate size town with 7 convents that all appeared large. The Museum is interesting, but mainly a reading one rather than one of many items. on display. The complex, crowned by an 18 m tall obelisk topped with a Gallic rooster, commemorates the French workers and designers involved in the construction of the Canal. Built in 1760, Casa Gongora is the best example of a Spanish colonial home in Casco Viejo.
