- Carol S3 contributionsWe were very fortunate to have Dennis as our guide. He is extremely knowledgeable about the canal and the history of Panama. He was very flexible to provide a tour tailored to our interests. After a fascinating tour at the Miraflores locks, since the timing did not work for us to see a ship go through, he took us to another lock where we could. As we had already been through the old town, he took us on a very interesting and informative drive on the causeway and into the downtown area. He also went out of his way to find us a sloth! - AMKAGDenver, CO72 contributionsWe've been on many food tours around the world. This tour definitely featured quality over quantity. The geisha coffee and rum alone were worth the price. Having it explained and traveling with our guide made for a wonderful evening. I love the shows Feed Phil, or Stanley Tucci that show you the foods of the country, the part you miss by just going where they go is the connection with the people. I do food tours for the history and information. So while I didn't love the beer at La rana Darado, I did love hearing about the 10% that goes the research to save the frog. Our tour was provided by Beautiful Tours Panama. Our tour guide was Gonzo Horna, also the owner. Simply put, he did a fantastic job. He picked us up at the hotel on time. His vehicle was very clean and had great air-conditioning. His written and verbal skills were exceptional and he responded very promptly to any and all questions via text prior to the tour. When we first met Gonzo, his English was so excellent that you would’ve thought he had relocated here from the States. However, he’s a native born Panamanian. Once we entered the van, he reviewed the day so as to manage expectations and give us a better understanding of the two UNESCO sites that we would be seeing. He has a pleasing personality and was very open to any and all discussions, suggestions and questions. We first visited Panama Viejo (located 8 miles ENE from downtown) the original site of Panama. While there, Gonzo enthralled us with his knowledge of the history of the origin of Panama City and its fateful encounter in 1671 with the pirate Captain Henry Morgan. From there, we travelled downtown to Casco Antiguo (a.k.a., Casco Viejo), the relocated location after 1671 for Panama City. Casco Antigua was full of restored buildings (with differing architectures), churches, artisans with their shops, and restaurants. Once again, Gonzo was full of information and made the locations come alive with his descriptions, including their histories. Simply put, Gonzo has our unreserved recommendation as a tour guide for Panama. Aldo, tour guide with his deep knowledge shared the history and showed me all the key places. He made the trip more exciting and fun. We also stopped to try out some delicious local food. I loved the Panama Canal, Ancon Hill, Panama Causeway and Casco Viejo.
