The co-existence of mosaics of Prophet Essa (Jesus Christ) and his mother with Allah and the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) perfectly illustrates the tolerance and moderation of the Ottoman Sultans.

Lovely courtyard with the usual (for Istanbul) beautifully painted domed ceilings, and a beautifully light and elegant interior.
The legend says Mimar Sinan built this masterpiece with the love he feels for Mihrimah Sultan, the wife of grand vizier, Rüstem Pasha.

Long story short, SMP is truly a masterpiece that is worth the (very short) detour from the main tourist path and may be even more worthy to see than the more famous mosques in Istanbul!
Yes, The Blue Mosque and other well known ones are a must to visit but there are so many more less well known like this one just as spectacular and beautiful for us to discover and treasure.
