What travellers are saying
- KTFairfield, CT6 contributionsFantastic experience doing the 4 day guided hike with Wilderness Guides out of Picton. Long days of hiking with no surprises as Sean, our guide, would point out in detail of the landmarks, distances and elevations of each day. Snack and lunch breaks with ‘cuppa’ helps to rest the tired legs. Nothing to worry about just hike from destination to destination. All the lodgings are superb, meals excellent and luggage transported everyday. Sean also gave us an insight into NZ history, Māori legends, discussions on invasive and endangered species of plants and animals etc… much appreciated, thank you for an enjoyable hike.Written 5 February 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - HahnTravelsLiverpool, Australia1,299 contributionsBeautiful views and scenery by water, hiking or by car. Plenty of walks down to uncrowded beaches. water an amazing colour in the sun. Amazing area, just get out and wander, grab a kayak or drive some slow roads - eg Picton to Havelock.Written 6 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - charles t2 contributionsFrom some of the previous reviews I was a little reluctant to do this museum. What a great deal for only $10nzd! Great video about the history of the ship and very nice display of artifacts.Written 21 October 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - johnnyroadmapNantwich, UK212 contributionsWhat a beautiful little town, the gateway to the South Island. I’ve never seen so many motorhomes queuing for the ferry!
We walked up path which overlooks the town and harbour, a stunning view on a lovely day. The town itself is very quaint with a lovely harbour side looking out to mountains beyond.
A great place to wonder and explore especially if the sun is out.Written 6 April 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The staff were great and very knowledgeable and happy to spend some extra time with us to explain the various animals, fish and birds on display. and as an added bonus the food was good to!Written 20 November 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Bea TWellington, New Zealand394 contributionsThis short, steep walk to the "hill top" look out is great. It takes approximately 40 minutes to get to the look out. The views are stunning. You see Picton. Waikawa ad the sounds. I prefer to walk the same way back to Newgate Street instead of continuning to end. Really the best walk in Picton. I think I have walked it already 50 times and I have taken quite a lot of visitors and they all liked it as well.Written 1 April 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - quiller003Shrewsbury, UK290 contributionsan area that has been predator-proofed and restored with natives plants and wildlife, all doe by volunteers. You can only get there by boat but you get 2 hours there - plenty of time to enjoy the scenery and listen to the birdsong.Written 2 January 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - chrissie sBrisbane, Australia29 contributionsWe traveled in the premium lounge. The lounge was very comfortable, spacious and the food and wine were a wonderful combination of NZ produce and premium wines/ sparkling. The facilities were clean and only available to the lounge passengers. It was the service that really impressed us. We had the lovely Kerriana and the lovely little Paula. Both of these ladies not only provided breakfast mimosas but also destination information and a history of the region. All the marine crew we encountered were friendly and professional. The scenery going down the Tory channel into Picton is absolutely spectacular and like a day trip all of it’s own.We really relaxed and enjoyed our smooth sailing and cannot rave enough about the Inter Islander and its service.Written 20 January 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - 1Kimb0Bexhill-on-Sea, UK17 contributionsWe went into the Isite office in Picton to get some information about afternoon boat tours.
We were unsure if we wanted to do one but received very useful advice from Amelia.
She also gave us other land options which gave a good choice of things to do.
She also warned us about the change in the weather the following day because one of the tours would have left us exposed to the weather conditions.
All in all we were offered extremely useful information and it was a pleasure to deal with Amelia.
Thank you

We were in picton for captain cook's 250th centenary celebrations but the museum failed to mention this auspicious occasion or have a special display for it. There was no children's area but my granddaughter enjoyed the pioneer life area without getting bored.Written 22 January 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - 1never2lateQueensland, Australia183 contributionsQueen Charlotte Drive is the scenic alternative Havelock to Picton. The road has many bends. This is a slow drive, so take it easy, make a few stops and appreciate the the great views. There are currently a few stops for roadworks, but did not add greatly to the time taken.Written 13 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
