Evening 4:30pm and we had an hour of Local Guide tour and thus able to better appreciate the Old Town, from the prominent & recognizable Preseren Sq to Robba Fountain, Dragon to Tripple Bridge (Tromostovje)
Richly stuffed with history the architecture of the Town is a mix of styles since BCE, from Roman ruins to the Medieval period transcending Baroque-style and ending with Austrian-influence. The historic center and capital of Slovenia definitely offers a lot!
We have an hour of free time to explore. It was early-Dec and a great experience as the city got dressed up for Xmas ( of hot chestnuts, mulled wine & other fairs ). ! There was the beautifully lit huge Christmas tree that draws all the eyeballs and photos shot. Surrounding are mainly retail shops and F&Bs where one can try out Slovenian delicacy’s, we bought chocolates.. Designated a car-free pedestrian only zone one can stroll freely at your leisure and be attracted by the fascinating retail therapy & alfresco cafes at the historic buildings. The fusion of cobbled streets, classical music, cafe culture to the chilled winter wind makes for an amazing combination, fast growing to be the Go-To place.
The bridge portion was the most packed but there’s where the main public toilets are.!
We understand it is a UNESCO designated spot too.
Really fascinated by the Town’s vibe.

This park is massive and would be spectacular in Spring when the flowers were in bloom. Still, it was very relaxing walking around observing the bird life and squirrels. There were a few swans in one of the lakes too. You could easily ride a bike around here to cover more ground.

Preseren Square is the center of Ljubljana’s Old Town. It is dedicated to the great Slovenian poet France Prešeren & situated where the Triple Bridge crosses the Ljubljanica river. At the center of the square lies the Prešeren Monument. It faces the statue depicting of Julija Primic, the poet's love. Just nearby the Prešeren Monument lies one of Ljubljana's most well-known buildings, the 17th-century Franciscan Church of the Annunciation. We had a local guide whom shared with us the history & development of the area.
It was only 5pm but dark as it is nearing winter solstice. The beautiful city location is busy with locals & tourists and quite a crossroads for transit to and from the Old Town. The square is cobblestone-paved and gave it an elegant and historic feel. Like most famous squares we can see the amazing & bustling place full of life, of the locals and tourists hanging out to socialize and people watch. There are the Xmas carol’s & street musici ans to add to the vibe. From the square you can see it all – the Triple Bridge, the historic buildings, the canals, the pedestrian-only Old Town, and more. The area is surprisingly clean and orderly. It’s a great place to take photos and surrounding buildings make for a wonderful backdrop -Instagram-able!.
By night the lights of old town turn the Preseren Square into magic and when it coincides with Xmas, now in early Dec, it is just marvelous.. . Probably this is just what Ljubljana is all about.!
Ljubljana is voted one of the underrated European cities in 2024 & Preseren Sq as one of Europe’s 50 most beautiful squares, Definitely worth a visit !

We took the funicular one way as we always intended to walk along the paths and down into Gornji Trg for lunch.

You can do quite a lot in the castle for free, and the courtyard is very pretty and not teeming with tourists. A stand in the centre sold homemade fresh lemonade for EUR 4.50 - perfect thirst quencher.

It’s worth trying out the paths immediately below and around the castle itself - there seem to be cafes at different levels, and even Slovenian wine-tasting.

The paths through the woods aren’t very well signposted, but it is so peaceful and quiet. Following your nose is probably the best option. We lost all signs for Gornji Trg but managed to find a path of sorts past the beehive and vineyard, and through the woods. There was a small bit of scrambling but otherwise ok!

Walked from there to Stari Trg for excellent lunch options!

We crossed this bridge numerous times during our stay in Ljubljana. The best time to enjoy the bridge and associated scenery is on an early morning stroll before your groups arrive. You can truly capture the beauty of this bridge

A gorgeous cathedral. Small entry fee. Beautiful detail inside and outside on the doors. You don't need to allow much time to walk around it.

We booked one of the many trips on this river and we wereortunate to have one with very comfortable seats for the trip of up to an hour. Live commentary gave you some of the history of the town. It also takes you out to the quieter end of the townwhichis nice for a sunny day.

Funky graffiti and street art district near the city center. Interesting collection of styles and types of art. East walk from the center of Ljubljana. Some might see it as a little sketchy, but we enjoyed it.

This is a real market with real food! It's also got some cafes and souvenir shops. The vending area has a milk vending machine! In late August the selection of fruits and vegetables was very nice!
