Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

- keen72762Vancouver, Canada362 contributionsVery cool experience to see the seals in their natural element. Got to witness a mom nursing their baby. Nice loop walk one can take.Written 9 March 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Anna GZurich, Switzerland248 contributionsI started the walk at the visitor center in Kaikoura. Don't miss out on Fyffe house on the way - very interesting history and enthusiastic ladies telling you about it all. A bit further on you can stop at the street stalls selling crayfish and more. From the car park I took the coastal route and saw many seals. At Whalers Bay you can take the path up the hill to the cliff walk and continue to South Bay. From up there you have good views. Walk along South Bay Parade till you see the sign towards Kaikoura. It is a nice 35 minute walk back to town. All in all it took me 5 and a half hours with visiting Fyffe House, eating, clambering over rocks at point Kean, taking photos and admiring the seals. At Whalers Bay they were quite close and not bothered by us tourists. There are cordoned off areas just before.Written 16 February 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- HahnTravelsLiverpool, Australia1,303 contributionsThe walk was pretty easy and the rewards were great. Early morning seems best time, there were hundreds of seals with pups playing, adults resting. The signs say stay 10m away and most people respect that which is great. Sometimes though you almost stumble onto some that have come ashore a bit further like the little one in our picture on the main track. Walk around to the second platform. A must do and it's free with great scenery as wellWritten 3 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Georgia PExeter, UK19 contributionsDid one of the escape rooms on a rainy day and really enjoyed it. Even though there were only two of us it was great fun and really reasonably priced. Added bonus of their being a brewery and board games next door!Written 17 June 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - nonalynTauranga, New Zealand263 contributionsWhat a treasure! Newly renovated with the oldie worldy feel. Pleasant young staff at the ticket booth and a very clean, new theatre with comfortable seats, a great screen and fabulous sound. We came across this by chance and loved our movie experience, leaving us wishing there were more theatres like this in our regionWritten 25 December 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Marianne WSanta Cruz, CA54 contributionsThis was the BEST experience EVER! I thought beforehand that I might be swimming with maybe one or two dolphins, should they happen to come around...but NO I swam with PODS of dolphins!! Four different times. The captain of the boat knows how to find the active pods and then plunk us right in the middle of them. The dusky dolphins swam around us, by us, circled us, went the other way. WOW that was fun. I will never forget it.
The business of Dolphin Encounter really has the organization of their trips down pat. No hiccups. And the crew is helpful and considerate, as well. I highly recommend this activity in Kaikoura.Written 21 March 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The boat was top class for what it was doing.
The disappointing part was the long delay in getting us from check in to the pier 10am to 11am - really unnecessary delay, no explanation or apology.
The on board staff were fantastic and only for the desire of the experience we would have walked away - so in essence the organisers know you are adaptive audience and will put up with poor service because of why you are there.
Great experience - pity about the organisation.Written 31 January 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. One of the highlights of New Zealand for us. The hire is expensive but you're limited to who you can hire from (there's guided tours but not many that will let you self tour, in fact this was the only company we found that would!).
Lots of safety talks, provided with flares, walkie talkie, life jacket, first aid kid and mobile phone... very professional. 100% worth it for the marine life you will see.Written 1 March 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - feliciaOrebro, Sweden9 contributionsWe had a beautiful walk along the beaches in Kaikoura with Kevin and his fascinating and intelligent llamas. It’s a cool experience to bond with an animal this way and I highly recommend it. The yummy cakes and coffee is a nice bonus!Written 30 January 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- MotivaKent, UK50 contributionsAmazing! Saw whales, seal and a mystery other single shape! We had a boat trip cancelled but this turned out better. I am a nervous flyer but it was gentle and I am so pleased we went for this.

- Logan Y7 contributionsEpic morning out with albatross encounter crew ! Super quick to Get on the water and was amazed my albatross and seabirds galore . Gary is such an amazing skipper and so so knowledgeable. We were even treated to a humpback popping up and surprising us when we were viewing the albatross ! Hugely recommend even if you’re not a diehard bird lover .Written 19 June 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Susan M4 contributionsViews like you've never seen before! The weather on the day was textbook perfect. Our guides Alex and Kerry were professional and friendly. Jason drove us to and from the site office in the comfortable transfer shuttle. The safety procedures were all excellent and gave us confidence. While I will admit to closing my eyes at times on the first zip, it's an experience with our son and his partner we will keep as a special memory. Do it! You only live once!Written 21 March 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Katie FMooloolaba, Australia158 contributionsWe spent yesterday morning swimming with the seals and enjoyed it immensely! I couldn't have had a better experience with the seals. The tour the were very carefully not to abuse the natural wildlife during the tour and explained the time before we set off (ie keep three meters away etc), except they forgot to tell the seals! These lovely creatures playfully somersault around us, looking us directly in the grave from less than a meter away. I always felt totally safe underway the expert care of Al, who was very helpful and expert.Written 25 September 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
