Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

- Grant NHastings, New Zealand1,517 contributionsWe'd been before on out last trip but it's definitely worth doing again. The displays are great. Our only gripe was the fact that the earthquake display was now part of the general museum - that's only because it was fascinating seeing it all in one place before. However, there's a lot to see and a huge amount of history and local stories. Very well laid out and something for everybody. We'd go again if back in the area once moreWritten 17 April 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Ann TPascoe Vale, Australia1,394 contributionsFyffe House is the oldest colonial building in the South Island. We were introduced to the museum by an enthusiastic young woman who gave us a personal guided tour of this interesting pink weather board house which was built on the bones of whales (literally) between 1844 and 1860 and has been the home of a whaler, a harbour master, a fisherman and their families. Worth a visit.Written 16 March 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.

- John NorvillTauranga, New Zealand2 contributionsAs far as the theatre was concerned it was top notch and the staff member was interactive. For both of these I would have given an 'excellent' review. The movie was excellent too BUT the volume was ridiculously loud. Within 1 minute I sounded my disapproval to staff who in all fairness was not prepared to adjust the settings. I waited until the trailers were over in the hope the film itself had less volume. It did but it was still far too loud. Twenty four hours later my ears are still suffering. No way should anyone be subject to this torture. If theatres want business then they need to consider their customers and not blindly follow the settings. Yes, I should have demanded my money back after the first minute. In future I will and I ask others to do the same. Then we can enjoy the films we enjoy with the appropriate level of sound. Personally I think a 50% discount would have been appropriate. This experience spoiled an afternoon outing with my wife who likewise suffered from the sound.Written 17 May 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
