Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

- Kevin PWaihi Beach, New Zealand432 contributionsThis is some of the toughest country on the planet to travel through. We're very fortunate that the time and energy has been put in to this trail to make it so accessible.
For a real taste of how tough it is, carry along the main trail up the Hokitika River for a couple of hours and see how far you get. Fast moving side streams, unstable ground, extreme weather changes, and near impenetrable rainforest. You're on the boundary of one of the few remaining true wildernesses in the world.Written 14 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. You can get into all the science if it or just enjoy the magic. Must do if you’re here in the evening. 10 minutes or 30 is worth the time to check this place out.Written 12 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Kris BBali, Indonesia2 contributionsWe recently completed the west coast wilderness trail as a group of two couples. From the outset Kiwi Journeys staff entire team were superb in every aspect of their organisation and commitment to ensure a great trip and experience. Their arranged accomodation was excellent especially at the Waterways (hokitika) and the hotel in Kumara. The entire trip was outstanding and my wife and I will definitely use this company again and certainly it has our full recommendation!Written 11 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - ChristchurchJulesChristchurch108 contributionsThe 4/5 is actually a reflection on me and not the setup. I am scared of heights and found it very challenging. I was so focused on putting 1 foot in front of the other and holding on that I didn't appreciate the beauty of the setting. My husband stopped at each info point to read the fact sheet, but I just had to keep going. Once I got to the last section, I managed to relax and even walk back a bit to try and challenge myself more.
I didn't go up the tower nor out onto the cantilever part, but my husband did. He loved it all.
I had wrongly assumed that I would be amongst the trees, but most of it was quite open, and I just looked straight ahead or up. It's great that I could walk holding onto the sides, and the structure does feel very safe.
The café, toilets, and shop are great and I just wish I wasn't so pathetic because obviously heaps of effort has been put into making this a top quality attraction.Written 21 September 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Thankfully the sky cleared up enough for a sunset through the clouds. There is a wide paved walking path. A bit of rocks you could scramble over to walk along the rocky shore. Parking was easy. A good bit available in pull in spots along the main stretch of beach, along with parking within the nearby blocks. It was nice to drive right over and park facing the ocean on a cold, windy day. We went out for small bits and also enjoyed sitting and watching the ocean from the car.Written 6 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - GPM NZAshburton, New Zealand9 contributionsA beautiful lake with a pretty waterfall to go and view. Lovely grassy area with a jetty to jump off and swim. Water is really cold though, haha.Written 31 December 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- juliegnz56 contributionsWent in late December after a night of heavy rain. A short and windy unsealed single lane road and a small carpark. It looks like it's beer coming over the side which is fun and unusual. You can carry on the same road and get back on the highway.Written 29 December 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Helena HLondon, UK1,117 contributionsWent back here after 19 years since my last visit. Still a beautiful place you can no longer walk all the way along the wooden pier type structure which is a shame. It meant I couldn’t recreate the photo I took many years ago. It’s a lovely place when the wind and rain aren’t there are you get a great reflection. Nice walks. Worth the short drive from Hokitika.Written 20 February 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Steve CWellington, New Zealand63 contributionsA nice wee cafe almost in the middle of nowhere (just when you are feeling like a coffee, this place appears!) and not only do they do eats and drinks they also sell local 'souvenirs' and things from the attached shop. But, on top of all that, you can buy the most delious fresh Westcoast Salmon. So nice!Written 8 August 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Jacqui13 contributionsExcellent service, very responsive, super helpful! Donna and Scott helped us with a bike relocation. They picked us up at a time that suited and made everything easy and convenient. They went 'over and above' when we unloaded our bikes and i realised I'd forgotten to pack any cycling socks. Scott immediately offered his own (freshly laundered) which prevented a miserable cycle experience - what a legend!Written 23 February 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Sha20167 contributionsScenic Waterways is a truly superb experience on the West Coast with very comfortable accommodation, great kiwi hospitality & a very memorable boat trip on their special land. Cindy & Gavin have created a real legacy and clearly have enormous connection with this special
place. We were a group of 5 doing the West Coast Wilderness Trail, enjoyed some chats about their homelands in Africa & highly recommend you add this to your plans.Written 29 February 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Excellent commentary on local history etc. Looked after all members of the party very well and researched information when we had questions on, e.g., local plants, and provided us with answers. Would definitely book again with Rachel! A most enjoyable tour.Written 6 November 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
