Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The Hokitika Gorge Walk (bridge walk) is a short (30 min return) easy walk, suitable for all ages that took us through lush native bush to an amazing suspension swing bridge where we were greeted with the stunning turquoise water of Hokitika Gorge.
The walk was well signposted, and the track was well maintained, making it an easy trek for our kids. The swing bridge added an element of fun and adventure for them.
The highlight of the walk was the breathtaking view of the gorge. The vibrant turquoise water was a sight to behold.
In conclusion, the Hokitika Gorge Walk is a must-visit for families. It offers an easy, enjoyable walk and a rewarding view that leaves a lasting impression. We left with beautiful memories and a bunch of stunning photos!

Short walk to glow worm dell off of Highway is fun and free. You can get into all the science if it or just enjoy the magic. Must do if you’re here in the evening. 10 minutes or 30 is worth the time to check this place out.

The 4/5 is actually a reflection on me and not the setup. I am scared of heights and found it very challenging. I was so focused on putting 1 foot in front of the other and holding on that I didn't appreciate the beauty of the setting. My husband stopped at each info point to read the fact sheet, but I just had to keep going. Once I got to the last section, I managed to relax and even walk back a bit to try and challenge myself more.
I didn't go up the tower nor out onto the cantilever part, but my husband did. He loved it all.
I had wrongly assumed that I would be amongst the trees, but most of it was quite open, and I just looked straight ahead or up. It's great that I could walk holding onto the sides, and the structure does feel very safe.
The café, toilets, and shop are great and I just wish I wasn't so pathetic because obviously heaps of effort has been put into making this a top quality attraction.

A beautiful lake with a pretty waterfall to go and view. Lovely grassy area with a jetty to jump off and swim. Water is really cold though, haha.

A good place to stop for a walk or a run. Follow the path alongside the beach. If you continue around, to the river you will come across a boat that kids can play on.

Went in late December after a night of heavy rain. A short and windy unsealed single lane road and a small carpark. It looks like it's beer coming over the side which is fun and unusual. You can carry on the same road and get back on the highway.

Great little centre with a range of different New Zealand animals, fish and of course Kiwis. We visited 3 different kiwi centres across NZ and this was the one where you could get up closest to the kiwi!

We stopped in here for morning tea during a recent three week SI road trip. We always carry a thermos of hot water and some coffee sachets with us on our travels.

This is a very beautiful spot. The weather was superb. There are a couple of tables with bench seats, we sat at one and there was another couple (who it turns out were from Melbourne in the SI on a whistlestop tour) at the other one.

It was such a lovely place to spend an hour or so, taking in the breathtaking view. The birdlife was amazing, with heaps of fantails flitting around and eating the sandflies on the wing. Didn’t seem to put much of a dent in the sandfly population but they are beautiful little birds.

The drive into the rest area on the track through native bush is really beautiful too.

Highly recommend this for a stop if you’re passing. It’s easy to find, just turn into the road opposite the Mahinapua Pub on SH6 (remember the Mainland Cheese ads on the tele??) and drive to the end of the road.

There are also very clean toilets at the site, thank you to the Council for providing such a great area to stop.

Great rainy day activity experiencing the Repair shed for engines livery and boating relics of the past illustrating mining and timber milling industries and the way of life from the mid 1800s. Highlights were the range of fire engines across the decades and the guided tour by Gilby with all his stories to bring the exhibits alive. Highly recommend. Donations

A great 20min walk that starts and finishes with a tunnel! Well worth the 15min car trip to get there.

If you are planning to cycle the NZ west coast wilderness trail we want to recommend West Coast Cycle and Tours. Donna and Scott were the best. Well organised, very friendly and thoughtful, nothing was a problem. EBikes were well maintained. Also very pleased part of the trip was two nights stay at Central Suites in Hokitika. Large double room, very clean, comfortable, modern and beautifully appointed. Great location 5 min walk to town and right next door to superb food and coffee at Bespoke. The first night at Ross and last night in Kumara Theatre Royal were great fun too. Thanks for a fantastic experience. 10/10

The lady making the coffee was Lovely - very friendly and cheerful. The setting in the Art Deco Theatre foyer is perfect.
We sat outside on a hot morning watching the world go by while we enjoyed excellent coffee.

Delightful lollie shop with not a single thing missing from the wonderful and large selection. My kids loved the giant candycane and lollypop out the front of the store. They felt like they were entering willy Wonka land haha. Prices are all reasonable and service was very friendly. Must do while you are in Hokitika.

Fantastic place to stay, such welcoming hosts Cindy and Gavin. Cabins are well proportioned and all you need and very comfortable. Food was terrific thanks to Tony (chef)and his wife also a chef. Gavin took us on the trip up the river and its was sooooo interesting and great to see a white heron. Thoroughly recommend staying here.
