Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

What travellers are saying
- cb4fullcircleAustin, TX91 contributionsThe walk from town basin is 3 hours and we needed to get on with our trip so we drove to the car park and walked the very short distance to the falls. With the recent heavy rains there was a very impressive amount of water moving over the falls.Written 31 August 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Jill K36 contributionsThe Whangarei Heads is such a fabulous area. Ocean Beach is huge and popular. There is good parking and bathrooms. Follow the trail for hiking. Then we drove over to Urquhart Bay where there is a smaller parking area. The walk over to Smugglers Bay was nice, even though a herd of big cows were very close to us! There were several other walks. The views are wonderful along the way.Written 6 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Richard TTauranga, New Zealand12 contributionsMy wife is a professional artist and we have friends who had visited the Hundertwasser Art Centre in January and recommended it to us enthusiastically. Therefore, having lived in Onerahi, Ngunguru and Kamo during my first 17 years, a return to the region of my birth, coupled with a visit to the Hundertwasser, seemed like a great idea on the occasion of my 70th birthday. I can certainly say it was an excellent idea. It was great to see the tasteful development of the old Town Basin and we had the additional pleasure of hitting it (by shear luck) at the time of the Fri night Canopy Food Market. Dinner sorted!! On the Sat morning we went to the Hundertwasser for a couple of hours and loved it. I know there was a lot of discussion and controversy surrounding the funding and building of the Centre, but now that it's completed I can say it is world class and a fantastic asset for Whangarei, Northland and NZ. The art works, exhibits, displays, explanations, photos, memorabilia and the museum itself tell a wonderful story of a true genius. Hundertwasser was a fabulously creative, innovative, eccentric, bold, caring, visionary artist and architect. Some of the exhibits are particularly poignant. I loved the carpet made of one of his artworks by weavers in Afghanistan. Then a little later I learned it was the same carpet that adorned his cabin at the time he died on board a cruise ship off the coast of Australia. Letters between him and politicians and others illuminate the type of person he was. Then, there's the magical roof garden which is a joy to behold. We thoroughly recommend the Hundertwasser Art Centre, together with the Wairau Maori Art Gallery - the first unique and dedicated public Māori Art Gallery in Aotearoa New Zealand, with various exhibitions throughout the year.Written 4 December 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Mrmist1958Auckland, New Zealand23 contributionsLived in Whangarei 7years, but first visit, surprised at sea mammals skeletel display in museum, , living bugs in glass display cases and wonderful kiwi house, with 3pm feeding so go a bit earlier to allow eyes to acclimatise to dark.great shop selections too.
Short walk over ridgebto all the rides; ride on train, conventional train carriage, hay cart rise and tram rides all on 3rd Sunday each month and very reasonable charges.
With this 2.5 hrs from Auckland, I think it is very under rated in National promotions.Written 7 April 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Hailey AlverDargaville, New Zealand3 contributionsMy family went here last year and it was so fun. I won last though but that was OK! The guy at the counter was nice and welcoming to our family of 5! I do think that at least 1 of the themes needs to change though ;)Written 27 July 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
