Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

- cb4fullcircleAustin, TX91 contributionsThe walk from town basin is 3 hours and we needed to get on with our trip so we drove to the car park and walked the very short distance to the falls. With the recent heavy rains there was a very impressive amount of water moving over the falls.Written 31 August 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Jill K36 contributionsThe Whangarei Heads is such a fabulous area. Ocean Beach is huge and popular. There is good parking and bathrooms. Follow the trail for hiking. Then we drove over to Urquhart Bay where there is a smaller parking area. The walk over to Smugglers Bay was nice, even though a herd of big cows were very close to us! There were several other walks. The views are wonderful along the way.Written 6 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Richard TTauranga, New Zealand12 contributionsMy wife is a professional artist and we have friends who had visited the Hundertwasser Art Centre in January and recommended it to us enthusiastically. Therefore, having lived in Onerahi, Ngunguru and Kamo during my first 17 years, a return to the region of my birth, coupled with a visit to the Hundertwasser, seemed like a great idea on the occasion of my 70th birthday. I can certainly say it was an excellent idea. It was great to see the tasteful development of the old Town Basin and we had the additional pleasure of hitting it (by shear luck) at the time of the Fri night Canopy Food Market. Dinner sorted!! On the Sat morning we went to the Hundertwasser for a couple of hours and loved it. I know there was a lot of discussion and controversy surrounding the funding and building of the Centre, but now that it's completed I can say it is world class and a fantastic asset for Whangarei, Northland and NZ. The art works, exhibits, displays, explanations, photos, memorabilia and the museum itself tell a wonderful story of a true genius. Hundertwasser was a fabulously creative, innovative, eccentric, bold, caring, visionary artist and architect. Some of the exhibits are particularly poignant. I loved the carpet made of one of his artworks by weavers in Afghanistan. Then a little later I learned it was the same carpet that adorned his cabin at the time he died on board a cruise ship off the coast of Australia. Letters between him and politicians and others illuminate the type of person he was. Then, there's the magical roof garden which is a joy to behold. We thoroughly recommend the Hundertwasser Art Centre, together with the Wairau Maori Art Gallery - the first unique and dedicated public Māori Art Gallery in Aotearoa New Zealand, with various exhibitions throughout the year.Written 4 December 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Mrmist1958Auckland, New Zealand23 contributionsLived in Whangarei 7years, but first visit, surprised at sea mammals skeletel display in museum, , living bugs in glass display cases and wonderful kiwi house, with 3pm feeding so go a bit earlier to allow eyes to acclimatise to dark.great shop selections too.
Short walk over ridgebto all the rides; ride on train, conventional train carriage, hay cart rise and tram rides all on 3rd Sunday each month and very reasonable charges.
With this 2.5 hrs from Auckland, I think it is very under rated in National promotions.Written 7 April 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Still a very nice, but strenuous hike - a lot of stairs and some uphill. But beautiful through native forest.
And with a view it must be even better!!!Written 30 December 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews. - Stephen T7 contributionsNOTICE: Earlier this past year, the caves were shut down after a 9 year old child passed in the caves. While the path is open (partially), all cave entrances are blocked. You will not be able to get in or even see the cave entrances. However, if you're passing by here, the pathway around the caves that are still open are gorgeous (albeit short in what is accessible). A mixture of forest and rolling green pastures with beautiful limestone outcrops, the place was magical in the evening. I felt like little hobbitons would pop out around the corner to greet us.
One more thing, Google maps does not have the right location. Look for a fairly large parking lot on Abbey Caves Road and follow signs around the area. The entrance to the trail is across the street, uphill, and somewhat hidden.Written 23 November 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The ball bearing clocks is a classic bit of engineering and you could watch this for hours.Written 5 August 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Amara M1 contributionWent in a few minutes before it closed so I was able to watch all the clock stop and hear the room go silent. What a collection! It’s worth an experience. - PeterHellAuckland Central, New Zealand3 contributionsThis place was one of the highlights of our trip North. We stopped in Whangarei on the way up to Bay of Islands and had a quick look. We will hopefully be back next year to spend more time in Whangarei.Written 12 August 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - AstonWhangarei, New Zealand6 contributionsA great place that gives birds a second chance at life. People like this are the reason we have such a great place to live in, with animals and wildlife still being around.Written 7 July 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - L_DTravellersWhangarei, New Zealand213 contributionsNo need to go to the South Island for Pancake rocks, we have them here in Northland. Great track - mind the tides for the stream crossing and it's best to go when it is dry and there hasn't been a lot of rain in the past few days because there can be some very muddy parts. The trail is pretty well marked, and it's not flat but not hilly either. As long as you are reasonably fit, you'll be fine. You can do the loop, but it comes back along the road so we always walk along the water and just come back the same way because the views are so nice. One time we did see seals in the water, which was a great treat. One of the best kept secrets in Northland :)Written 13 November 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Lyndell38 contributionsThis is a great flat 5km loop trail with a nice variety of interest features to view, seats to sit on for those wanting to take a slower pace and exercise equipment for the more active.Written 29 January 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
