Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

What travellers are saying
- Compass7909985 contributionsAbsolutely incredible trail, well maintained, marked and just such beautiful views. Having great facilities at the huts such as gas, all cutlery, pots and eating utensils means you don't have to carry as much. Toilets are best I have experienced on a NZ tramp- toilet paper provided and sawdust shavings to add to bowl after each use.
Highly recommended tramp
PS We were also so lucky to have incredible weather the whole 5 days which obviously adds to the overall experience
And of course finishing the trip with a night at Rough and Tumble Lodge at trailend was the icing on the cakeWritten 13 January 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Donald Munroe EHamburg, NY92 contributionsVisiting the site of this ghost town that once was the largest coal mine in New Zealand was an amazing experience. Very little remains of the settlement and mine, or of its famous 'incline" which took the coal about 2,000 feet down the steep slope (think roller coaster) to the plains below for shipment to Westport. But the excellent interpretive displays bring the scenes to life. I also recommend reading the two novels by Jenny Pattrick (The Denniston Rose and the sequel Heart of Coal) to get an even deeper insight into the community and its remarkable inhabitants.Written 13 November 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - 62Peter1952Ashburton, New Zealand213 contributionsQuite expensive to get in,I thought. A good experience, and worthwhile, to see the work done in the mines in past days. A good souvenir shop, with lots of goodies to purchase. The displays were very good, along with the usual historic pictures, and life size displays of wagons, and a stroll through a mine reconstruction.

- Theresa DPerth, Australia1,237 contributionsAll the info you need for the local attractions plus a fabulous on site museum and well priced merchandise in the gift store
The museum tells the story of the minerals that have established many lives in the area. It starts with a mix of magic and science with the stories of these minerals in a short film . After that there are extensive displays with good explanations so you can learn as much as you want to at your own pace. More movies are set in the darkness of a coal mine.Written 7 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Sherpa182776222632 contributionsI had an amazing four days (3 nights) walking solo on The Old Ghost Road. Barry at Buller Adventures made this possible by arranging the helicopter flight to the first hut. His consideration and service was outstanding.Written 9 January 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Dale JNapier, New Zealand204 contributionsQuite the awesome bit of coast. Much better than I expected. Neat stones at the high tide line, miles and miles of sand, moody seas and skies.
There's a public toilet and some parking spaces loosely defined. Be careful driving on the sand if you don't have 4wd.
People were there planting natives when we visited. Very nice to see!
There a painted log down towards the river mouth which is random and kinda cool.Written 25 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. We booked the tickets online which made things really easy. There are 3 cinemas but the cinema we were in was a compact elevated seating cinema with good surround sound and comfy chairs. Picture quality was comparible to other cinemas we have been too. We found check in, and purchasing of food all straight forward and the food was cheap for a cinema too compared to Wellington. Good amenitys, parking etc.Written 20 June 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.

- 992amandaKyneton, Australia6 contributionsAmazing service. We rented two bikes for an overnight trip on the old ghost road - Adrian had us fitted, briefed and prepared for the adventure. Some damn good old fashioned customer service that meant we thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience on the best equipment possible. Would highly recommend.Written 15 January 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- peterrM6374WLAuckland Central, New Zealand264 contributionsI used this company in order to get to Westport and continue onto the “ old ghost road”. I had been quoted $1000 for this service by a company in Hokitika but eastwest coaches came in at $90….yep…buyer beware.Written 2 October 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
