Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

What travellers are saying
- Jayden BToowoomba, Australia46 contributionsI saw seals and penguins and water and mountains but NO DOLPHINS therefore worst trip ever. 0/10
Nah actually so good, would recommend. Also the trip there was perhaps the prettiest drive I've ever been on. I like the little squeel the Kea make. 100/10 for the birds.Written 13 August 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The guided boat ride through the caves is serene and captivating, making it unique and unforgettable natural wonder to exploreWritten 14 September 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - NlhoffMadbury, NH7 contributionsMy cruise included Doubtful, Dusky and Milford Sounds on a perfect, blue sky day. Each sound was magnificent. Pictures can’t do this place justice. If your cruise to NZ includes this opportunity it is the highlight of the trip.Written 9 April 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - IncrementalTouristMelbourne, Australia74 contributionsBeautiful lake with lots of options to explore (the jet boat ride was fantastic but there are also bike rentals, walking trails, seaplanes, helicopter rides and paragliding). Most accommodation in Te Anau is along the lakefront with the mountains in the background- lots of photographic opportunities!Written 16 April 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Michael CDerby, UK1,981 contributionsWe stopped at this small bird reserve so that we could see the takahe, a bird which was, at one time, thought to be extinct. There are other birds to be seen within the sanctuary which has free admission. An enjoyable visit.Written 11 February 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Simon DAuckland, New Zealand826 contributionsRated very good given this was free, DoC run (on I expect a small budget) and close to town. Otherwise as a paid exhibit it would have scored lower.
Was good to see some Takahe reasonably close up and to read and see the work being done to extend the population numbers of this bird and some of the duck species where they appear to have been breeding well. The Kaka were difficult to spot, but the Antipodes Island Parakeets were more interactive/engaging. The Blue Duck display was closed unfortunately.
Worth a look on a nice day and for probably about an hour duration.Written 14 March 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The track is challenging in places with up hill gradients until reach Rainbow Reach. It is worth following the sign into Rainbow Reach carpark and walking across the swing bridge which spans the Waiau River. There is about 5kms of riding on the Highwsy past the Manapouri Airport. Take care with the cross wind from the west on this straight.Written 28 April 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - TonyC_AustinAustin, TX335 contributionsReally neat place to watch a movie and with a really nice attached bar. We saw the 35 min. movie about the Fiordlands as we enjoyed beers. A must do for an evening or if the weather is bad.Written 29 April 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Jon ATe Anau, New Zealand16 contributionsHi, We hired 2 x Magnum Ui5 e bikes and they were fully charged and in good condition. Gemma and Julian are really great and passionate about their local area. This home based buisiness makes it really easy to pick up and drop off and gets you away from the mainstream town tourist hire and puts you in a stress free environment. Julian was most helpful in getting us set up and comfortable. We rode the Lake2Lake trail about half way and then returned.

Our guide Tanya prioritized our safety on the slightly icy roads and clearly loved her job. She was knowledgeable, made sure we saw all that we could, and baked us scones! The Milford Sound cruise was perfect; we had to pinch ourselves to believe we were in such beautiful territory. The snowcapped mountain tops and permanent waterfalls were breathtaking. The unexpected meeting with the endemic keas was so fun! They have such beautiful colors underneath. The early cruise at 10:30 am meant we could make stops in the afternoon where we enjoyed the sunshine and took awesome photos to remember the day forever! We were back in Te Anau by 5 pm. My daughters and I enjoyed ourselves immensely.Written 27 May 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
