Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The guys were amazing! We and our 4 packs were picked up by lighter from the tricky rocky beach, ferried to the main vessel and taken at fabulous speed in tough conditions to Golden Bay. This added to our great tramp from Masons Bay - and we got to the pub in time for dinner!

There were informative, easy to read displays that gave a real insight in to the history and development of Rakiura Stewart Island. There were also some good audiovisual presentations as well. I was especially interested in the information about the mutual benefits of the marriages between Māori and non-Māori, and how that led to more harmonious living. This was definitely one of my most enjoyed museum visits ever.

A wonderful touch of Stewart Island history and the special bond the community has told by the adorable wee Lola.
    Thanks Penny for your hospitality.

Very good staff with excellent knowledge of the hikes as well as tides and weather forecasts.
If hiking, definitely come and hire a locator beacon. Reasonable prices for what they can do for you.
A good display as well with some local history, but don’t skip the Rakiura Museum next door.

We booked the shuttle from Invercargill airport to Bluff and the ferry across to Stewart Island. Arrived at the airport expecting a 3 hour wait but found the shuttle bus was there for the earlier time, the driver was very happy to take us early and to sort out an earlier ferry crossing which was really helpful. Had a good chat in the bus on the way to Bluff, learnt a lot about the area. And really enjoyed meeting the driver's dog!

Our guided trip to Ulva Island with Carly was amazing. She was so knowledgeable and patient, and the only bird we didn’t see on island was a kiwi. There was also a māmā sea lion and her pup. Having a guide certainly maximised our opportunity to see all the birds, and we felt that it was truly worth the money.

Our guide Ulva was so knowledgeable and enthusiastic. We saw robins, kaka, parakeets, saddlebacks, white fronted tern, red headed kakariki, bell birds. Watched a pup and mum sealion playing together. Unspoiled pristine forest.

Had an exceptional day out sea kayaking with Phil. He was incredibly knowledgeable on the hitory of the island, the fora, fauna both topside and under the water. We did the half day tour, kayaking around Hope, charity Islands, past Iona and onto Native Is. We had sea lions surfing the waves between us, little blue penquins popping up to say hello, even saw a albatross. Phil provided awesome scones and baking sitting on a idyllic beach for lunch. He was very safety conscious, explaining every situation well (beach landings etc). Cannot recommend this tour and Phil enough. Best way to see Stewart island and totally worth it! Thanks Phil.

Our party of four chose a Birds and Farms combo tour, and were extremely happy with our experience. Our skipper was so knowledgeable and responsive to our interests, and we really got great value for our money.

10/10 highlight of our Stewart Island trip. We were a group of 9 (2 families, with kids ranging from 3months to 10years). Fluff took us to 3 or 4 different fishing spots to make sure we were always catching fish (perfect for the kids attention spans). He dropped us off at a beautiful secluded part of the island for a bushwalk to a secret beach, and cooked us lunch of mussels and crayfish that had just come out of the water that morning.

The kids are all still talking about their turn steering the boat and who caught the biggest blue cod. (Except the 3 month old, who is too sensible to engage in fisherman’s tales)

There was plenty of room, snacks provided, beautiful scenery and local knowledge. Highly recommended for families - but I reckon would have been great fun for a group of grown-ups too.

Thanks Fluff for really making our trip!

Snorkeling was fantastic. Oliver was a lovely chap and had all the equipment needed for a great snorkel. We started off with a briefing giving an outline of what we were likely to see. Ollie sized me up correctly making sure I had a tight fit to keep warm. There was also a hood vest to go on under the top, as well as gloves and booties. We went to Ulva Island where we stopped near Nugget. It was raining, but who cares? This is a perfect rainy day activity. Snorkelling into the kelp forest. We saw blue cod happily just sitting there. As this is a protected area no risk of being fished. Having said that without Ollie I may not have found it, he was an excellent guide.

It can appear quite scary within all the fronds of kelp but while they may wrap round they also unwrap. Following the expert advice I navigated over and under and through without an issue. Ollie trialed the emergency back up gear in a float. We also saw wrasse, brittle stars, sea tulips, jelly fish and of course paua.

We then went over to Sydney Bay and entered the water. No guarantees that any sea lions would want to check us out but they did. Being in the water with them was incredible. Simply floating while they swam around trying to work out what the heck we were. Awesome.

We then came back across from Ulva Island. I was not blue or freezing but glad to get dried off and into warm clothes having had a unique experience.

This was definitely the highlight of my time in New Zealand and I suspect will be hard to beat.

Absolutely loved our time on Tequila with Anthony. Hadn't handlined since I was very young, it was different and quite cool. Beautiful day and lots of blue cod caught. Saw a royal albatross, penguin, shark and plenty of birdlife. Thank you taking such care with us Anthony, highly recommend.
