Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Rhys our driver was knowledgeable and very open to questions about the area…. Although we felt like Stewart island was a bit scarce of activities we did enjoy our time in his tour.

My partner and I went on a kiwi spotting visit with Furhana in the last week of Jan. 2024. We started at 21:30. 1 hour of a presentation (very educational, Furhana knows her material on the kiwi in and out!), then 2 hours in search of the kiwi. It was a small group, 5 visitors (by contrast, we were with 16 other people on a kiwi spitting tour a couple of days before). Furhana gave precise instructions on what was allowed or advisable and what not during the tour. You may think it has spoilt the fun, but to the contrary, Furhana made sure we all had a perfect view of two separate kiwi birds sometimes as close as 1 meter away from us or even closer! Thank you, Furhana. Dear visitors, go Rugged Ranger! Highly recommended.

Highly recommend Phil as a sea kayak guide. Knows his stuff both about kayaking itself and knowledge of local wildlife. Absolutely ideal way to go out and around Stewart Island and see some cool things! Clearly a really nice guy with excellent chat 😃.

I rather unfortunately managed to get seasick, clearly I'm not meant to be on the waves, no matter how gentle they may be. Many people seem to think I might be the first person to get seasick in a kayak...

Anyway, Phil was so compassionate and caring - I really appreciated how he adapted the tour to my (slightly pathetic) needs, so I could have a good sit down while the others went back out to finish the tour.

Despite my nausea, it was a top experience and I'd highly recommend Phil to anyone going out to Rakiura and thinking of getting some kayaking on the go.

We had a wonderful pelagic tour with Matt as our skipper. In addition to seeing two species of penguins (Little Blue and Fiordland Crested), we had close encounters with many albatross (Southern Royal, White Capped and Buller’s) as well as Giant Petrels, Sooty Shearwaters, Shags and Gulls. Lots of New Zealand sea lions too! Matt was a great host and highly recommended.

A fantastic day out with Fluff and his two dogs. Fluff is a very experienced skipper and a great host. Took us to great fishing spots, cooked us crayfish and mussels for lunch. Good catch of cod. Thoroughly enjoyed the day and dinner of cod and salad that night with a wine.

My fiancé and I had never snorkeled before but Ollie was an amazing guide and teacher.
He has a great passion for diving that shows and was patient with us when we didn’t pick up something right away.

The Kelp forest allowed us to see countless fish and see wildlife (in addition to the Kelp/ plants) that was one of the most Emerson’s experiences I have done.

I’d recommend this to anyone making a trip to New Zealand - make your way to Stewart Island so that you get to experience this!

Absolutely loved our time on Tequila with Anthony. Hadn't handlined since I was very young, it was different and quite cool. Beautiful day and lots of blue cod caught. Saw a royal albatross, penguin, shark and plenty of birdlife. Thank you taking such care with us Anthony, highly recommend.

Furhana provided us with an experience that all must have when visiting Stewart Island. She is not only friendly, accommodating, but knowledgeable and passionate about the environment and ecology that exists on Rakiura. We were left with the feeling of how our country would have looked like before it was settled and what the early settlers would have faced - we felt a connection to both past and present of Rakiura and NZ. Thank you for giving us this wonderful and fabulous experience.

Ian is the best host you could have. He catered for our 2 groups of 30 without any drama. He suggested a format for our sea-life and Ulva Island excursions and he was spot on. Everyone had an incredible time on this perfect vessel.

Keith is an awesome skipper. Very friendly and helpful. My hubby and the other fishers got a bin full of blue cod easily and a few terakihi too. As hubby wanted to catch a trumpeter Keith went out of his way to target them for him. His filleting skills are amazing, so fast and great to watch and he packaged all the fillets into plastic bags for everyone to take. We took some fillets straight to the Kai Kart in Oban and they cooked them for us. How fresh is that!

I went on a kayak trip with this company in Feb with my sister. It was awesome and great value. I haven't done much kayaking before but the guide was lovely, friendly and informative and as it was only myself and my sister booked he made the trip to suit us perfectly. The wildlife was out and we were able to get very close. It rained a little bit but as we were provided with wet weather gear this didn't bother us at all. I think this is the best way to see Stewart Island and would recommend this company to anyone. Thanks Rakiura Kayaks for an amazing experience.
