Would highly recommend going over to Ulva island during a stay in Stewart Island . Does not matter about the weather . Wear walking boots and take a raincoat . Amazing birds , stand and listen and you will hear and see the cutest birds . Very well maintained and looked after by dedicated DOC volunteers. Great paths and beaches . The seals were an added bonus . Lovely experience- thank you .

The guys were amazing! We and our 4 packs were picked up by lighter from the tricky rocky beach, ferried to the main vessel and taken at fabulous speed in tough conditions to Golden Bay. This added to our great tramp from Masons Bay - and we got to the pub in time for dinner!

I had never been to Stewart Island and my daughter and I decided to camp while on the Track. The first day was lovely, hard because of the 15kg pack but otherwise a lovely track meandering through bush. When we got to the campsite there were 3 deer happily grazing, not phased by us being there. We had individual tents so we set them up close to the water, there was a long drop near by and we boiled our water and enjoyed the views. It rained softly that night and more campers arrived setting up their tents. What a treat to go to sleep with the sound of the water and gentle rain on the tent, sleep so well. The next day was by far the hardest day, so much mud and a longer hike, was suppose to take 6 hours but took us close to 7. That night we slept in the bush, it rained, heavier that night and we camped under trees for protection as the wind got up. It definitely wasn't the nice gentle rain and was not such a good night weather wise. I did hear the kiwi shuffling around and calling to each other which was amazing. The last day was a good day, not so much rain and easier track. It was a beautiful hike, we meet some lovely people from all over the world and saw a part of NZ that was unspoilt, a definite 9/10.. just because of the mud.

Great way to spend some time learning more about local area history. Covers some pre European Māori elements. Most is post European settlement. Lovely building and a good way to spend a couple of hours.

A wonderful touch of Stewart Island history and the special bond the community has told by the adorable wee Lola.

Very good staff with excellent knowledge of the hikes as well as tides and weather forecasts.
If hiking, definitely come and hire a locator beacon. Reasonable prices for what they can do for you.
A good display as well with some local history, but don’t skip the Rakiura Museum next door.

The red shed has it all. Rented my e-bike there., maps, booking for tours, post cards and directions to the post office for stamps ( only a 5 minute walk away). Really nice staff.

Garden is full of native plants with several paths to walk along. There is a covered picnic table area, toilets and don't miss the viewing platform with great view towards Oban. We saw kaka, mohua there as well.
