Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

What travellers are saying
- Natwhal20 contributionsHighlight of the trip - would definitely recommend if you do the Milford Sound Cruise with Southern Discoveries. We saw black coral, lots of different fish and an eagle ray! Felt like we were on a diving trip!Written 22 April 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Judith J2 contributionsAuthentic old tunnel. A bit claustrophobic for some. An amazing task completed with picks and shovels. I wish the exit on the Milford side was still the home of the cheeky Kea!Written 27 February 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - guennie3Cambridge, UK460 contributionsThis is a most beautiful drive and the best way to get to Milford Sound. We drove one way in the rain and saw so many amazing temporary waterfalls in addition to the permanent sights. We stayed overnight at the campsite in the rainforest and then returned next day in the sunshine with blue skies making our return views spectacular in a different way. Almost too many amazing photo ops. Take this road rather than a plane or helicopter for the full Milford experience. Better even than by coach tour as you can stop as often as you like whenever you choose.Written 19 November 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - David LamIrvine, CA15 contributionsThe Milford Sound Overnight Cruise was possibly the highlight of our entire honeymoon! We luckily got the last overnight cruise of the season. The cruise was all-inclusive, with dinner, breakfast, and lodgings.
We spent the first half viewing Stirling Falls and going on a small boat tour around Harrison Cove while hearing about the natural phenomenon around the sound. Seeing sunset on the boat in Milford Sound was absolutely stunning. At night, there were plenty of events to keep us occupied, but everybody mainly spent time gawking at the Southern Lights that graced us.
The morning after, we headed out to the opening and the Tasman Sea, which was an awe inspiring sight before heading back to the dock.
In between our experiences, we also had plenty of food that was much better than expected. There was plenty of coffee and tea to keep us warm while we spent time outside just soaking in the natural beauty around us. The lodgings were also quite comfortable given that we were out on a boat. Kudos to the entire crew for keeping us entertained and comfortable throughout the entire trip!
I'd also highly recommend exploring the area around the wharf. There are some absolutely beautiful views as well.Written 5 October 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Expensive sure but the experience of a lifetime and we were so well looked after. 5 stars all round.Written 12 February 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Tracy58 contributionsWow what an amazing day. Thanks to the rain it was waterfalls galore. The icing on the cake was coming in from the mouth 2 beautiful dolphins crested the waves for us. Amazing time, crew really friendly and informative. Milford sounds a most see in any weather...loved it. - Daisy5 contributionsOur family of four (two adults, two teenagers) chose the Sunriser Classic kayak tour and had an absolutely magical, misty morning on Milford Sound. Our guides, Alannah and Ollie were terrific - they delivered the relevant safety information and instructions with humour and charm; we always felt safe and always knew what was expected of us. None of us paddles regularly, so the Sunriser Classic was a good speed for us - active but not strenuous. Alannah was very knowledgable about the cultural and natural values of Milford Sound; she is a true local and a great storyteller. We were fortunate to see terns diving in the sound and to spend time watching seals doing a spot of fish-herding. I really noticed how much more we saw, travelling at kayak-level and kayak-speed, than we would have done on a cruise ship. We highly recommend this experience.Written 25 January 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Brad S4 contributionsOutstanding trip! Even the bus ride with Shallindra was fantastic. He was very friendly, informative, safe and a great sense of humor!
Boat crew was great as well and the photos you’ve seen do not do the actual experience of being there justiceWritten 24 August 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Great Blue Cod.The captain was so welcoming and informative as we toured the sound, I would go down the list of the entire crew if I remembered everyone's name. Suffice it to say that everyone cared that we enjoyed the experience. This private tour had lots value even when considering the cost. EXPERIENCE IT IF YOU CAN.Written 17 December 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
