*Likely to sell out: Based on Viator’s booking data and information from the provider from the past 30 days, it seems likely this experience will sell out through Viator, a Tripadvisor company.
Amazing views of the Otago peninsula! So lucky to have seen sea lions, fur seals, a bunch of sea birds, and double penguin (yellow eyed and the little blue)!
Our guide Fergus is super nice and very professional, introducing us to different species and spotted birds like the kingfisher. We had a great day!!
Experience guide/driver. Enjoyed the tour totally. Very connected locally and knows the area well. We were skeptical to pick a local tour other than the cruise ship excursions, but this toured out to be our best picked.
What a wonderful place. Easy to find, well marked on the road, so that is always nice, oh, good parking as well, in fact, there are even a few picnic benches too. Our guide was excellent, and we saw yellow penguins (molting, so laying down) crested penguins, for real, we saw seals and sea lions, and some fan tail birds. Beautiful scenery, easy walking, and the weather was great. Highly recommend.
This was such a fantastic evening. The guides were really informative and clearly cared about what they were doing. They told us exactly what to listen and look for. We saw loads of Blue Penguins . It was a truly magical experience
Only complaint is that the tour guide/driver gave away the seats that my 71-year-old mother and I had already occupied at the start of the tour to another couple that joined the tour later on.
We were not informed ahead of time that the tour bus was fully booked. Otherwise, we would have left our coats on our seats before exploring the first stop (Dunedin Railway Station + Toitu Otago Settlers Museum). It's also absolutely unfair to give preferential treatment to guests who arrived after us. My mother was very angry.
"Exploring New Zealand" is one of the biggest tour operators at the cruise terminal in Port Chalmers and hosted several different tour groups that day. Despite that, the staff (in bright pink vests) were pretty organized (assigning people to the correct tour via colored stickers) just as long as you checked in with them early.
You can also purchase passes to Larnach Castle during check-in at the cruise terminal (although given only 30 minutes there, I opted to only buy cheaper garden admission at the site itself).
As a warning, this Nature and City Tour follows the itinerary listed on Tripadvisor and Viator, NOT the one listed on their own site. And the order of locations visited can vary depending on the guide/group.
We had a fabulous tour with our guide Danni. She was knowledgeable and fun to listen to. We learned a lot about wildlife, your indigenous history and Dunedin. We saw lots of great wildlife along with the amazing Blue Penguins. My husband and I had a fabulous tour and would highly recommend this company and Danni as your guide!
Fantastic opportunity to experience coastal and marine life. Great crew and narrative about history and wildlife. Saw albatross, seals, sea lions, and lots of sea birds.
This is a great trip!! Rachel worked hard to find the sea life and birds that we wanted to see and we were not disappointed!!! She was in contact with me even before the trip, helping me with directions and missing tickets.
Saw 17 species of bird, a Hector's dolphin and lots of seals. We were lucky enough to see a wild yellow eyed penguin and 3 kinds of albatross. Amazing day out. Unbeatable if you're a nature lover.
Wonderful small boat adventure. We watched sea lions enjoying a lunch, albatross soaring, tiny penguins playing, all with our incredible captain/mate/naturalist!
We both really enjoyed this activity. The information given on the yellow-eyed penguins at the beginning was very educational and presented clearly. We then were driven to the reserve and walked very quietly along trenches to see 2 penguins moulting. The penguins seemed unaware of our presence. Then off to the coastline where we saw 6 other penguins and a similar number of sea lions. This inlcuded 2 penguins and a sea line coming into the beach and waddling up into the dunes. Lastly we saw many penguins who were being cared for at the facility to help them to recover from various stresses. It was also good knowing that the fees we paid help support these fascinating birds.
What an informative introduction to the beauty of the peninsula and the non human inhabitants of Dunedin From the purkeko , stilts , flat billed oyster catchers, paradise ducks ,plovers , herons , royal spindles to the lazily frolicking sea lions / intent seals to the majestic albatross nesting in Pukekura Pa , the Hoiho and the Fiordland crested penguins at the OPERA , we rhotoughly enjoyed Rob’s tales
Chris was an absolutely fantastic guide - VERY knowledgeable and a lot of fun. I would highly recommend this tour for those coming in on a cruise ship as Chris met us right in the cruise terminal and had us back in plenty of time
I cannot say enough good things about this tour. Kim picked us up from our hotel in Dunedin and took us on an amazing journey through the Otago Peninsula. He is extremely knowledgeable about the birds and we got to see stilts, oystercatchers, herons and so many others. In addition, we saw sea lions, yellow eyed penguins, crested penguins and albatross. The weather was perfect and we learned so much about the area. In addition we toured the Larnach Castle gardens and some of Dunedin, included the university and the steepest street in the world. All in all it was a very memorable day.
