Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

If you are in Dunedin, a visit to the Otago peninsula is a must. We are wildlife enthusiasts, and we visited the Royal Albatross centre, which is a must, great sightings of Albatrosses flying and on their nests. Very informative centre, and we followed this with a visit to Opera to see yellow eyelashes well as crested penguins on 2 km walk on the dunes and cliffs. It is also possible to see see blue penguins in this area when they come back to their burrows in the evening. It's all well worth a visit.

I had no idea there was a disappearing gun on the peninsula. Definitely pays to book in advance, we ended up taking a shorter tour than planned, so chuffed to have still seen some albatross, even if not up close.

We took the Triple Crown Tour (Wildlife Cruise, Albatross tour, Penguin and Wildlife tour). Each tour was fun, our tour guides were knowledgeable and pleasant, and we were thrilled to see albatross and penguins in the wild.
We were also very thankful for Dan who piloted the Wildlife Cruise and who changed a flat tire for us! The tire on our rental car went flat while we were parking for the cruise. We thought our day was ruined, as we would have to miss the cruise and probably more of our holiday while we took care of the car. Dan told us to get on the boat and he would help us afterwards. We did and he did. After the cruise, he got the tire changed, and we were on our way. We missed only a little of the Albatross tour, and none of our other time in Dunedin. Thanks Dan!

We had a two hour guided tour with Madison, which was fantastic! The time absolutely flew by. We saw Takahe, both parents and two chicks, as well as bellbirds, Tui (what wonderful sounds!), fantails and tiny quiet riflemen, all of which Madison highlighted to us. Seeing the Kaka and Tui on the feeders was lovely, after our tour we sat for a long while on some benches and just watched them come and go. Madison was incredibly knowledgeable and answered all our questions.

The cafe was delicious - soup, wraps and 10/10 cakes (brownie and a carrot cake with proper icing) and very well priced.

We spent 4-5 hours here overall, between the guided walk, our own wanderings after, and lunch.

All of it was well worth the cost and it's wonderful to see conservation being done with such dedication, there are definitely some ideas we're going to take back to the UK.

A beautiful beach where you can see sea lions and fur seals. What a joy to see them playing on the beach. Highly recommend a visit

It's a fabulous drive down the Peninsula, and so much to do at the end. To actually get into the albatross nesting area costs quite a lot, but you can usually see them flying around. From the viewing platform on the southern side, you can see shag colonies and often there will be seals on the rocks below. On the harbour side of the peninsula there's a track down to Pilots Beach where you can often see Little Blue Penguins. The Albatross Centre has a really good gallery which tells the history of Taiaroa Head (Maori pa, gun emplacements, albatross conservation), a gift shop, and quite a nice cafe.

A great place for a peaceful walk in the native bush and listening to the bird song.
Lots of people walking dogs who were all respectful of other walkers - we didn't see a single dog mess left behind (not that we were specifically looking for it).
Many different track options suitable for all levels of fitness.

There is more to this Domain than what you can see from the front. Playpark and a little aubourium. If you turn to the left you can follow the boardwalk out over the wetlands. Worth checking out with the guardians password at the end of the walk. It is only 10 mins long.
