Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I found this tour to be less than I expected, but also more than I expected. You are picked up and taken with a van from your hotel or city centre to the Otago Peninsula. We were told upon pickup that the regular driver was not available, and that the driver who subbed in had only done this evening tour once before. So I am not sure if this is how it usually goes or if it was the driver. The atmosphere felt lacking and anytime we saw a bird, he would point it out, but not stop, or stop long enough for those of us who wanted a photo, to take one. I found that annoying. The lack of seabirds/albatross was disappointing, but may have been the time of year, so not the fault of the tour, but I had expected more, based on the tour description. However, once we got to the centre, it was great. The 1/2 hour session about the history of NZ, and information about the penguins was very interesting! Then we were out on the deck waiting for the penguins, and it was an amazing experience. We were all able to see them, and this was the only tour that I found that you were allowed to take photos, which I really appreciated, for the memories. I also really appreciated that although the deck could hold more people, they capped the number of people, so that everyone was able to see. It was clear that they really care about the penguins, thier health and safety, and I appreciated that as well. We loved the whole second half of the tour, and it was nice to be picked up and driven back to our hotel. Well worth the time and money to do this one.

Picked up directly from the cruise ship transfer in Port Chalmers. Good overview of Dunedin if your time is limited. Thank you to Chris for making the tour very enjoyable and informative. 🙂

Our driver/tour guide, Jeff, was excellent. He packed so much into the tour taking us to the prettiest parts of a very pretty city in Dunedin. Jeff explained the history of the various places we visited from the dormant whale trading through the Edinburgh like university and the glorious historic train station culminating with ninety minutes at the castle.
The bus was perfect for our tour size, Jeff's banter and dry Kiwi humour along with both his deep knowledge and pride in the area made this a great event for us.
You cover a lot in Dunedin in the time available and Jeff ensures you are back at the port well before departure.

The tour and guide were good, but the use of a large bus in the sites visited made it very difficult for the customers, no stop for pictures or bathrooms most of the morning, and the only stop at beach was about 300 meters uphill because there was no manouver space, forcing us, mostly seniors, to walk up and down 300 m of a steep hill, and use a very dirty portable toilet.

My Wife & I along with 2 of our good friends took this tour Sunday 7th of April 2024. Our tour guide, Murray or “Muzza”, was awesome, very friendly and knowledge about the city, buildings & history. We started the day visiting the worlds steepest street “Baldwin ST” & all 4 of us successfully walked to the top, OMG that is tough! We then visited the beautiful Dunedin Railway station, we toured around the city as Muzza told us about each building he pointed out with various history points, Lastly, we headed out to the Larnach Castle & Gardens, we had lunch there then Muzza gave us a guided tour of the castle, the workmanship was amazing! The coastal scenery was beautiful, we highly recommend this tour & company, Bex was great to deal with and quick to respond to messages.

It was a fantastic tour guided by Heike, who is friendly and resourceful. Along the drive to Otago Peninsula, Heike gave us detailed and interesting explanations of the history, characteristics and scenic spots of Dunedin. Besides the highlights in the city, we were impressed by the beautiful scenery of the Peninsula. Heike's good time management enabled us to complete the tour with high satisfaction. It was amazing to see seals at the coast and blue penguins in the nests. Although we were not lucky enough to see the very rare wild yellow-eyed penguins at the shore, we could see the one kept by the Reserve in close distance. The 6-hour tour was fun and rewarding!

This was one of our best trips in NZ. Could not recommend it enough!! It was incredible for wildlife - we saw sea lions, lots of seabirds, penguins (wild and at rehab centre) and albatross (including chicks). It was a fantastic afternoon and an experience I will never forget. Our tour guide Felix was very knowledgeable.

Unfortunately and due to extreme weather conditions, our cruise was unable to dock in Dunedin port, so we had to miss this tour. However, I would highly commend teh customer care offered by Monarch Wildlife Cruises and Tours. They responded promptly to our messages and agreed to refund our tour. We will definitely book this tour again with Monarch Wildlife Cruises and Tours next time we are in Dunedin.

Ann was a terrific guide/host. We had plenty of scenic stops on the city tour and the van was cool and comfortable. Ann was especially knowledgeable about the caste and it’s gardens and was in every way gracious and friendly.

Trii was delightful from beginning to end! She allowed us the choice of picnic or hot lunch and then shared her discount at her local grocery store and offered food recommendations! (Like Whittaker chocolate bars!) She also provided informative and interesting commentary, and was eager to answer questions and share her love of New Zealand. Toward the end, when we wanted to meet up with local friends, she flexed and dropped us off at the train station and returned a bit later, without reducing the quality of the tour for the other passengers. As for the Albatross experience, I had no idea how fascinating these birds are…now, I’m a fan! Thanks, Trii!
