Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

One of the best wildlife tours in Dunedin. The Clearwater Tour takes you to one of the most spectacular locations in Dunedin and it's private so you have it all to yourself. The fur seal colony is so cool to see. I'm not aware of a better one you can go to. The beach was full of sea lions and we even saw some Hoiho which is impossible to do on public beaches now. The guides were super knowledgeable and friendly. My guide Sian gave us so much information about everything we saw along our journey. The lambs on the farm were the cutest cherry on top.

A fantastic day where we were able to see many different things in and around Dunedin. Lucy shared her knowledge of the local area and was informative and interesting. We really enjoyed seeing the different buildings in Dunedin, the wildlife and also Larnach Castle. The views of the area were also beautiful. Thank you Lucy for a wonderful day!

Fantastic experience!! Guides were friendly, animated and very very knowledgeable about the local area, culture and wildlife. Not overcrowded when we went with plenty of space on the viewing deck for people to move around and get a good look at and photograph the penguins. Saw 40+ penguins come in over an hour and their antics are so cute and funny. Brilliant breeding and environmental management program while still allowing very close encounters with the birds. Highly recommended for everyone young and old. Short walk down and back up the steps to the viewing area from the clifftop.

Our driver/tour guide, Jeff, was excellent. He packed so much into the tour taking us to the prettiest parts of a very pretty city in Dunedin. Jeff explained the history of the various places we visited from the dormant whale trading through the Edinburgh like university and the glorious historic train station culminating with ninety minutes at the castle.
The bus was perfect for our tour size, Jeff's banter and dry Kiwi humour along with both his deep knowledge and pride in the area made this a great event for us.
You cover a lot in Dunedin in the time available and Jeff ensures you are back at the port well before departure.

Picked up directly from the cruise ship transfer in Port Chalmers. Good overview of Dunedin if your time is limited. Thank you to Chris for making the tour very enjoyable and informative. 🙂

Kim picked us up right outside the port terminal. We then proceeded on a great tour of the city with a bonus of his son playing the bagpipes for us! We also saw the railroad station, some great scenic overviews before heading out to see the yellow eyed penguins and then to the Albatross Center. It was a great full day tour with lots of great things to see. Kim was a great guide and we fully recommend him!

The tour and guide were good, but the use of a large bus in the sites visited made it very difficult for the customers, no stop for pictures or bathrooms most of the morning, and the only stop at beach was about 300 meters uphill because there was no manouver space, forcing us, mostly seniors, to walk up and down 300 m of a steep hill, and use a very dirty portable toilet.

Kim was a fantastic guide as he showed us the highlights of Dunedin. We had time to visit the city, plus we had lunch at the Larnach Castle. We visited the castle, too. Kim had exceptional knowledge and humor which made for a great day! It was the best excursion on our 12 day cruise.

My mom and I loved this tour! This was our first visit to NZ, and we knew almost nothing about the Otago peninsula going in, so it was fascinating to learn about its history and its wildlife from our excellent guide and driver, Jonathan. The first part of the tour was just a small group of about 12 in a comfortable-sized van, driving through the peninsula and stopping for beautiful views and bird spotting. Then we met up at the Royal Albatross Centre with everyone else who was booked for the Blue Penguins experience, had a few minutes to shop in the gift shop, and then gathered for an educational talk about the penguins we were about to see. At dusk, we all watched from the purpose-built platform as the penguins began to emerge from the sea and waddle up the beach towards us to their burrows. There were three guides teaching us about the penguins, pointing out constellations in the night sky, and serving hot chocolate ($4). They made sure everyone swapped positions on the platform throughout the evening so we all had turns to get different views. The penguins were delightful, and completely unbothered by all the people, as long as we stayed quiet and respectful and stayed on the platform. The entire tour, from start to finish, was so well thought-out, and we were very well taken care of. The best part is that all proceeds go towards conservation and restoration of the area and the wildlife. I would recommend this tour to anyone interested in natural history, New Zealand history, wildlife, especially birds, and just generally having a great afternoon and evening in Otago/Dunedin.

My first time in Dunedin and we saw a lot! The sun shone almost every day too, so that was a big plus. Lanarch castle was definitely worth seeing. We tried to book the tickets on this site but that's no longer possible. 2 of the upstairs rooms are being renovated, so the entrance fee was only $30 instead of $45. The whole place is beautifully renovated with the tower still in progress. Do visit the lovely cafe in the Gun Room - a huge space with 3 big fireplaces.
Also interesting was Olveston House. It's a guided tour but we were the only visitors that day and the guide was amazing!
Restaurants abound in this city, so a huge choice. Visit the beautiful railway station and art gallery on the first floor and take the train on a 3hr return journey down the coast. Beside the station is the fantastic Settler's Museum - not to be missed. We went twice!
Take a drive along the coast road towards Portobello - a cute tiny village and stop off for lunch at a local cafe.
Parking in the city is expensive ie $3.50/$4.50 per hour but there is a small car park nearby which is usually full. I suggest parking further away and walking for about 15 along the main road to the Octagon where there are a couple of cinemas, a theatre, churches galore etc.
And.......... go to Tunnel Beach! A meandering downhill path takes you to a tunnel through rock to a beach, or stop before that to admire the view.

Rachel was exceptional in taking us from Port Chalmers to Portobello on a truely typical sunny day in Dunedin. The Harbour was like a sheet of glass .. so calm.
Rachel gave a commentary all the way over and certainly knew her stuff.
Strongly recommend the trip on Port to Port.

This tour is simply amazing. Dunedin is a gorgeous little place and well worth a visit. Rachel was very informative and went out of her way to ensure we seen all the marine mammals.
