Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

What travellers are saying
- Mark LSan Jose, CA2 contributionsWe were looking for something to stop over on our drive up the coast and even the New Zealanders hadn't been here before. Thought it would be a quick drop in, but ended up spending a couple of hours wondering through the museum - reading all the history and looking at all the aircraft and amazing displays. The whole family (grandparents through teenage kids) enjoyed it. Also enjoyed having a coffee and a bite of lunch in the cafe (very good variety and excellent food). And, of course, found a couple of items in the gift shop that were unique purchases. It was an unexpected find and well worth the stop. Free admission, but easy to make a donation either in person or on-line which was also appreciated.Written 8 July 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Michael CDerby, UK1,981 contributionsWithin an easy drive from Christchurch, this is a very beautiful area, especially as you approach Akaroa. The road winds across the hills in a series of zigzags with great view all around. Little River is a great place to stop along the way.Written 30 November 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Taylor R1 contributionI grew up in Riccarton so was always vaguely aware of the history of the house and bush, but never in detail. I had Marina as my tour guide and she gave me an EXCELLENT tour, super informative, friendly, and knowledgeable. The very definition of going above and beyond. Definitely get along for the tour, it really humanizes the family and you learn a lot of detail about the history of the area.Written 11 July 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Emma AWellington, New Zealand7 contributionsThis museum has an extraordinary collection. Whaetever your area of interest - weapons, war, music, gardening, fishing, bushcraft, weaving, carving, building, smithing, colonial history, Māori history - you will find something to fascinate here. It is not uncommon to see an adze in a museum. It is uncommon to see the adze lashed to a wodden handle with a flax rope in a way that shows how it was held and how it worked, with an accompanying picture. The kereru snare is a highlight - it really shows you how they work. This museum is not flashy, but it is a gem. Worth travelling out of your way to visit. Good coffee and pie at the store, and a walk on the beach make a half day well spent.Written 2 May 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Gemma RWellington, New Zealand350 contributionsThis is a must do, and completely free activity if you have children. A large wide exploration space indoors on the second floor with a view over the city. A perfect place to go for a wet day or somewhere to escape the heat. Large pits and tubs of every type of Lego, a large indoor playground that is unique, intriguing and has a glow worm cave, slide and climbing space. Books galore, games and puzzles and 4 large TVs set up with PS4 consoles and extensive range of games. It hosts a dressup/roleplay space, a drawing space and other areas that are modern and interesting, virtual soccer etc. Lots of friendly volunteers onsite to assist with anything you need during your visit. We had an absaloute blast here. Highly recommend.Written 4 January 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Christina V6 contributionsWe did two escape rooms at CodeBreakers, and enjoyed them so much that we booked a third room for the next day. The rooms were really well-designed with a mix of sequential and non-sequential puzzles, and they were challenging but solvable. The staff were all very friendly.Written 2 May 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.

- JoR15 contributionsThis was an amazing experience, had such a good time and we were very lucky with such clear weather that day!
Our tour guide Maria was great, and knowledgeable!
You get to geek out and hold or take photos with prop replicas (axe/sword/flag) which was fun, and there’s a nice lunch included with it to finish the trip nicely!
