Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

- Annica MNew Zealand29 contributionsThe garden is nice. Flowers bloom and very relaxing to the eye. It's nice to unwind and walk around the area. - JohnAuckland, New Zealand31 contributionsI never really knew that there was a gonola in Christchurch, so it was pleasant to find it. The cars are small and the ride steep - not for those who fear heights.
At the top is a viewing platform, shop, and cafe. The views are spectacular and the cafe offers good dining.
Overall the only negative was in relation to costs for the ride and refreshments.Written 23 September 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The old advertising from yesteryear that was still in some carriages added to the charm. We first did a full lap of the city then returned top various locations we chose to get off at.
The staff were friendly and informative, and all in all a memorable day was had.Written 8 June 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The backstage penguin experience was wonderful to see the penguins up close and hear all the information on the penguins including work being done in the wild to protect them.Written 23 June 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - RachNesBrisbane, Australia122 contributionsSmall museum with lots of information and history of the earthquakes of 2011.
The displays were confronting and the stories from people who experienced the earthquakes were emotional.
Well worth taking a seat and listening to all of their stories. Don't rush through it all.Written 27 August 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. There are birds everywhere. And not just sparrows. There are attractive and easy to read signs all over the place detailing the unique animal species that are located at Willowbank. There are pond areas and water areas everywhere.
It was a delight to see the children feeding the eels as soon as you walk into the park after paying admission. We caught the latter part of the magic show and loved it. There is a small little-used lunch area with picnic tables behind the magic show, and adjoining the toilets.
A great place for families. Easy to walk. Children love the smaller and larger animals, Especially the birds that are often roaming freely.
You can purchase a bag of small food to feed the birds and also a different bag of larger food pellets to feed the larger animals such as the deer. Make sure to purchase these small white bags when you buy your admission as they are not available elsewhere in the park.
And, yes, we were able to spot two kiwis in the darkened kiwi shelter. It was magical.
Thank you, Willowbank, for a delightful day. Please give me a link if you find this review helpful. You can also look for reviews that I have written for Christchurch, Auckland and Wellington as well as Brisbane.Written 16 January 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Mark LSan Jose, CA2 contributionsWe were looking for something to stop over on our drive up the coast and even the New Zealanders hadn't been here before. Thought it would be a quick drop in, but ended up spending a couple of hours wondering through the museum - reading all the history and looking at all the aircraft and amazing displays. The whole family (grandparents through teenage kids) enjoyed it. Also enjoyed having a coffee and a bite of lunch in the cafe (very good variety and excellent food). And, of course, found a couple of items in the gift shop that were unique purchases. It was an unexpected find and well worth the stop. Free admission, but easy to make a donation either in person or on-line which was also appreciated.Written 8 July 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Michael CDerby, UK1,981 contributionsWithin an easy drive from Christchurch, this is a very beautiful area, especially as you approach Akaroa. The road winds across the hills in a series of zigzags with great view all around. Little River is a great place to stop along the way.Written 30 November 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - TR3SSEmerald, Australia61 contributionsMy 3 year old loved this playground and found plenty to do!
There's definitely a few pieces of equipment better suited to older kids but we managed 90mins here and still had to pry our daughter away at lunch time!
The food trucks are brilliant and offer parents and caregivers a coffee or snack.

Was such a great experience to get up close to Reggie and learn all about him from the keepers Caitlin and Colin. Also loved seeing the only Gorillas in NZ. The giraffes were another favourite and feeding time with the lions.Written 26 July 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Suze333Perth, Australia31 contributionsOur guide, John, was absolutely brilliant. Not only did he dress the part but his dedication was clear and his knowledge phenomenal. He was an incredible host and I could have listened to him all day. Highly and thoroughly recommend. Easily he best experiences I have ever had looking at a heritage home and learning about its history and the family who created it and lived there.
Our self-guided walk around the ‘bush’ was also thoroughly enjoyable and our lunch in the beautifully preserved dining room was delicious.Written 15 September 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Julia @Scrumptious SolentSouthampton, UK4,381 contributionsA lovely green oasis in the city, this is a super river to walk along and enjoy seeing the botanic gardens, statues, people punting on the river - and a bit of wildlife too. We enjoyed seeing the longfin eels peeping out from the shadows - very large and impressive!Written 25 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
