Great tour. Informative with amazing scenery. So much packed into the day!
Sadly we were out side of Penguin time but we saw seals up close and the little penguin boxes as if they were there.
Gary the guide/driver was a great host.
    Thank you Maossie Tours.

We had a great tour in the Aoraki-Mt Cook area with Gary from Maossie Tours. Gary is very friendly and knowledgeable, and took great care of us throughout the day. Though the weather wasn't the best, and Mt Cook itself was shy all day, we had a very pleasant day seeing great lakes and glaciers, hearing about the history of the region, and visiting small towns in rural New Zealand. I recommend it highly, because you get to see this part of the country close up, and you can take in the stunning views as Gary drives.

A fantastic tour that takes you into some of the best scenery in New Zealand as well as learning about different aspects of lord of rings . Even if you are not a big fan of the movie , I would certainly recommend this experience for the beauty and wilderness .

The weather was great and we got to see no less than THREE whales in our tour! Each of them for about 5-10 min. And when they disappeared we had the tail view. The crew was great! Despite previous reviews, our guide stayed quite when the whales dove so that you could make a nice video without the commentary.
Only tip for the company is to make clearer during online booking that you have to report to the ticket office to collect tickets. Most companies nowadays will accept digital tickets on mobile phones.

A shout out to Hugo, our tour guide, who we discovered had stayed the night in Christchurch to make certain he picked us up promptly at 8:15 am. Our tour took us out across the Canterbury Plains with its sheep, cattle and deer farms then up into the hills that overlooked the Banks Peninsula.

Our first destination was Manderley Farm in Little River. Here we had a sheep dog demonstration as well as a sheep shearing. Watching the sheep dogs run off into the hills to herd the sheep down to the shearing barn was amazing. Our host, Mary, then provided us with coffee, tea, fruit punch and homemade cookies.

From there it was a drive around French Bay to the little town of Akaroa, Hugo's hometown. We had lunch at Bully Hayes and then time to shop for some of the famous wool products that are available in town.

After lunch Hugo asked us if we wanted to work some of those calories off. We said of course so she took us to little known traihead that meanders up a hill looking back at French Bay and Akaroa. Along the way we spotted some metal sculptures of a crocodile, some giraffes and at the end, a rhinoceros made out of automobile parts. A fun little jaunt.

It was a delightful day with a native New Zealander. We can't thank Hugo, and Canterbury Trails, enough.

During our over three week tour of Australia and New Zealand where we experienced a variety of tours operators in both countries, we found that that Canterbury Trails was the absolute best operator in either country. While a huge part of this extremely positive experience has to do with our specific tour guide, Mandy Mitchell, that the company itself provides small personal touches from beginning to end made the experience a joy.

Unlike other day tour operators we faced throughout our journey, Canterbury Trails pays attention to the details that make a travel experience memorable and positive. For example, when we checked into our hotel, a letter was waiting from the company welcoming us, telling us who our guide was going to be and instructions about appropriate clothing for the tour. Although the time of the tour start was already on our itinerary from our U.S. travel agent, that written Welcome was reassuring as our U.S. agent had gotten several tour times wrong. That Canterbury provided Mandy’s and the owner’s name, and the local contact information the day before the tour was reassuring and considerate.

We first used Canterbury for the Akaroa day cruise in a small group and then the next day our party of three undertook a separate private tour, by train, and then by SUV through Arthurs Pass and then back east down to Queenstown. In both cases Mandy was our tour guide. She was superb, knowledgeable, energetic, friendly, and helpful throughout. As there was some inclement weather during parts of private tour, Mandy made several key suggestions that allowed us see more of the key sights along the way, making much better use of our time than what our travel agent had outlined.

We expected to carry home memories of the South Island’s scenery and history. We didn’t expect that we would also bring back such fond ones of our tour guide.

Fiona did an excellent job of showing us Christchurch and briefing us on the history and current situation of the city. Then came the wine tasting in the Wairapa region: an excellent selection of vineyards where we had time to talk personally with the staff and appreciate the lovely settings, for example the gardens and architecture of some sites. The group was small and lively discussion ensued throughout the tour.

Tia picked us up in Christchurch for us to start our 10 day adventure. We stopped in Hanmer Springs for three days and then she picked us up again and stayed with us as we toured the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand. Since she had been raised here and had been driving for several years she was full of information, cool tips, neat history, plant life, Moriori History. She was a hoot to be around and she made sure and confirmed all of our reservations prior to each days arrival. If you get the pleasure of having Tia as your guide you will be so thrilled. We miss her already.

Dermot was highly professional and knowledgable. He was safety-conscious, and navigated the mountainous roads and one-lane tracks with ease. His vehicle was spacious, clean and comfortable. He knew the best places to eat, rest, take walks and snap good photographs. E.g. we stopped at Castle Hill, which looked exactly like a Lord of the Rings scene, although it was not the actual set. While he was a good conversationist as he drove, he also let us take naps when we needed it. He was accommodating towards our requests to tweak the itinerary, including last minute requests, like jet boating on the Waimakariri River. As a result we enjoyed our day trip to the Pass!

We paid $223.72 x 3 people to include the sightseeing tour of the city before drop off. Unfortunately, I dont know why, we were dropped straight back to the Crowne where we were staying. Booking it directly with the venue would have saved us $270 as we already had a hire car. So thumbs down to Tripadvisor for that.

The actual dinner and concert was fantastic, as well as the walk through the reserved with a very informed ranger
