Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

After our visit to the Riverside Market, we took a walk through the Christchurch Botanic Gardens. We saw a lot of people with folding yard chairs heading in one direction. We asked someone what was going on and found out that there was a concert that afternoon from 2:00 to 4:00 pm. We decided to see if we could find a place in the shade on the grass to enjoy the band "Got the Blues with Penny Blues Band and Mudfish." They were excellent and actually played songs we knew the words too. We really had a wonderful time.

We spent several hours walking on the wooden and dirt paths slowly throughout the park. What a delight it was! There are birds everywhere. And not just sparrows. There are attractive and easy to read signs all over the place detailing the unique animal species that are located at Willowbank. There are pond areas and water areas everywhere.

It was a delight to see the children feeding the eels as soon as you walk into the park after paying admission. We caught the latter part of the magic show and loved it. There is a small little-used lunch area with picnic tables behind the magic show, and adjoining the toilets.

A great place for families. Easy to walk. Children love the smaller and larger animals, Especially the birds that are often roaming freely.

You can purchase a bag of small food to feed the birds and also a different bag of larger food pellets to feed the larger animals such as the deer. Make sure to purchase these small white bags when you buy your admission as they are not available elsewhere in the park.

And, yes, we were able to spot two kiwis in the darkened kiwi shelter. It was magical.

Thank you, Willowbank, for a delightful day. Please give me a link if you find this review helpful. You can also look for reviews that I have written for Christchurch, Auckland and Wellington as well as Brisbane.

My 3 year old loved this playground and found plenty to do!
There's definitely a few pieces of equipment better suited to older kids but we managed 90mins here and still had to pry our daughter away at lunch time!
The food trucks are brilliant and offer parents and caregivers a coffee or snack.
A bit of shade might be nice especially during sunnier days!

I grew up in Riccarton so was always vaguely aware of the history of the house and bush, but never in detail. I had Marina as my tour guide and she gave me an EXCELLENT tour, super informative, friendly, and knowledgeable. The very definition of going above and beyond. Definitely get along for the tour, it really humanizes the family and you learn a lot of detail about the history of the area.

My children (7 & 9) and I were visiting from Australia in June 2024 and enjoyed brilliant weather the day we went to Orana. We have been to other similar places in Aust, and Orana exceeded expectations on cost, interactions, viewing of animals and joy levels. Entry is so affordable, as is the cafe and gift shop. We had an exceptional guide on the shuttle (Elizabeth), which helped us map out the park and know where we wanted to go back to. The stand-outs were the giraffe feeding, Tassie Devils, kiwis, porcupines and playground (which is such a great idea for burning off some energy). Best of all, the animals seem well looked after and happy in their large enclosures. I highly recommend to all!

Sumner beach is great for swimming as it has flags, however Scarborough on the other side of Cave rock is an excellent place for surfing, especially if you are learning . Stoked Surf school is based right at cave rock.

A lovely green oasis in the city, this is a super river to walk along and enjoy seeing the botanic gardens, statues, people punting on the river - and a bit of wildlife too. We enjoyed seeing the longfin eels peeping out from the shadows - very large and impressive!

Port Hills is a short distance from Christchurch and offers many different trails/tracks to hike, which are bucketed under the following broader areas:
    - Victoria Park, Sugarloaf Circuit
    - Bowenvale Reserve Walks
    - Mt. Vernon Park and Rapaki Walks
    - Halswell Quarry Walks
    - Bridle Path to Godley Head Walks
    - Crater Rim Walkway
    - Kennedys Bush and Ohinetahi Walks
    - Head to Head Walkway and Harbour Walks

I had limited time and ended up hiking the Maori Gardens Track, which is part of the Head-to-head Walkway. It's located off of Sandy Beach Road near Sandy Bay and estimated to take 30 minutes. The street is a side street and can easily be missed. There is limited parking and a port-a-potty or port-a-loo although it did not look well-maintained.

The trail is really narrow and not marked well. The end of the track comes to an abrupt end when it intersects or meets the Governor’s Bay Road. You essentially need to turn around and go back. The views are pretty and if you have limited time, would recommend this track.

Awesome trip and beautiful scenery, the cafe had a couple of vegan options. But the hill from the Diamond Harbour jetty to the cafe is steep and might be too much for elderly people, especially on a hot day. I wish there were a shuttle of something up the hill.

Scenic spot to chill out. Watch the waves breaking, maybe dotted with a few surfers. Take a stroll along the pier towards the favourite fishing spots at the far end, or a wander along the extensive sandy shoreline. Beautiful views, especially to the south. Public hot pools close by also.

After visiting the Christchurch Farmers Market on a beautiful Sunday morning, we walked over to Mona Vale Park. There were hardly any visitors in the park, albeit a very warm day of 31°C. The rose garden is beautiful. Take a walk along the river and see ducks. Sit on a bench and have lunch.

The views around every corner were amazing especially on a beautiful summers day. However some very small parts of the track and surrounds have collapsed in a little bit but it doesnt effect the walk.

This is a must do walk when visiting Christchurch. The views throughout any of the walks you can take when at Godley Head are stunning.
This is one of our favourite walks, we live near by and just never get board and are constantly wowed by the scenery every time depending of the day, weather and season.
And after you have walked one of the many tracks you can drive back down to summer for brunch lunch or a refreshing beer as a reward.
