Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I visited the Christchurch Art Galley twice on my trip to New Zealand, once at the beginning of my trip and again at the end to see a newly opened exhibit.

One interesting exhibit was "From Here on the Ground" which featured paintings of industry and urban scenes. The paintings showed vintage scenes. If you visit the areas shown today, you can see how much has changed.

"He Kapuka Oneone: A Handful of Soil" explores the connection between the people and the land. "Maori Never Ceded Sovereignty to the Crown", 2023, by Robyn Kahukiwa illustrates Maori protests. "Colonization Triptych", 1999, by William Dunning packs a lot into one painting.
L: Julius Vogel, newspaper editor and politician, sits in front of scenes of early settler life.
C: An interpretation of Giovanni Bellini's "Transfiguration of Christ" with a colonial governor in place of Jesus.
R: Maori chief and military strategist Rewi Maniapoto.
"Ka moe te whaea i te wai", 2024, by Ross Hemera is based upon Maori rock art.

The new exhibit "Doubles & Doppelgängers" features some interesting art works. "Quasi I' and "Quasi III", 2018-2020, by Ronnie van Hout are the symbol of the exhibition. "Kindred", 2018, by Patricia Piccinini shows the bond between orangutans and humans. "chicken/man", 2019, by Ron Mueck shows a staring contest between an old man and a young hen. This was my favourite exhibit.

An interesting museum was the Ravenscar House Museum. A wealthy couple wanted people to see their art collection as displayed in a domestic setting. Their house in the suburbs was destroyed in the Christchurch earthquakes. They built this purpose-built structure in the city centre to house their collection. I took a one hour tour of their house museum and then wandered by myself to take some photos. The library door dates from approx. 1650. The outside of the door was concealed as a bookshelf. The bedroom features furniture by David Linley (Queen Elizabeth II's nephew), made in the 1990s. Since the museum is supposed to be like a house, there are no labels on the exhibits. You have to download the information.

I am presuming this is the main art gallery in the centre of Christchurch (I live here and didn' know it was 'Robert McDougall Art Gallery"). New modern building - but I'm afraid the art isn't up to much. As it is in the city centre and near the botannical gardens, arts centre, museum and Cathedral Square then you could wizz round really quick (it's free). but nothing has inspired me yet.
