Still partway through a major renovation and strengthening following the 2010/2011 quakes so some areas are still off limits. Yet to regain it's vibrant atmosphere but making good strides. The great hall is always worth a visit.

I stopped when cycling down Riccarton Rd. when I saw this lovely wooden building.
There was a great photo exhibition with photos on NZ.
There is a small shop of chinese buddhist articles, books and paraphernalia.
    And a cafe.

It's exciting in Christchurch these days because the resurrections are happening thick and fast. My latest resurrection discovery is an old favourite - CoCA - just around the corner from The Christchurch Art Gallery, on Gloucester St. This is a small gallery built in the brutalist style of the 1960's - lots of hard edges, white walls and unforgiving concrete and so atmospheric for all that. It houses a moveable feast of different sorts of offerings, usually from local artists. Often there is a lot of installation pieces, which is what I saw yesterday, as well as wall art, photography, sculpture and mixed media.
Prior to the earthquakes it was also a fabulous selling gallery, with a well stocked and intriguing collection in the stacks. I asked if there were plans to start a selling collection again (I hope so) but the point seems undecided.
There's a little cafe at the front, with some outside seating, smelling beguilingly of chocolate!
CoCA is easy to access - you can walk through restart from the Bus Exchange. There is no dedicated parking but there's metered street parking and it's a short but leafy walk from the free parking in the Botanic Gardens ( access from the Armagh St Bridge).

I always enjoy visiting this gallery with its variety of art and changing exhibitions of new artists. It is great to see exhibitions of NZ and local artists. Although predominantly paintings, there is also some jewellery and sculptures.
Min Kim is an excellent host and is happy to provide advice and information on the artworks.
The gallery is quite spacious and there are several rooms to provide different themes and artists. Recommended.

If you are looking for affordable and creditable NZ art you could try this small selling gallery in Papanui. I was astonished to see the quantity and quality of the stock here, with a large variety of artists and styles of wall art. I found some work by artists I already was aware of as well as some people whose work is new to me. There is a variety of media; a few photos, works on paper, right through to large acrylics and oils on canvas. I think that this is a great place to find a piece of art whether you are local or a visitor from overseas looking for something interesting to adorn your walls and remind you of NZ. Lots of the works are quite small so would be easy to pack safely but it looks as though the gallery will also ship as I noticed lots of bubble wrapped pieces.
The gallery is situated in a small residential side street across the Main North Road from North lands Mall so you will find good bus links to and from here. There is also off street parking.

I have visited and purchased diverse art works from this gallery in Christchurch several times. Each time the owners shipped all the way to Texas and everything has arrived in perfect condition.
The variety, quality of the original, fresh and beautifully crafted works of ceramic, jewelry, wood, paintings, glass etc is unimaginable for this small place behind close to the cathedral...Prices are3 very competitive and inpacable service and attention to shipping details.

So pleased we have discovered John's Waihora Gallery, his work is truly amazing.
We have been looking for a piece of art to hang in our lounge for the last 6+ years, today we found it.
A substantial piece of photographic art "A small lake near Clearwater".
Waihora Gallery is a 5 min drive from Halswell, pop in and take a look if you are travelling to Akaroa its not out of the way.
Thank you John for being so accommodating, its on the wall and looks fantastic.

Here is a little gallery in the backstreets of Sydenham (which, incidentally, is becoming quite the location for small galleries showcasing local artists) showing works by Christchurch artists. Fiksate has a particularly Christchurch vibe with the current exhibition as it is featuring tiny models of Christchurch buildings wrecked and lost in the earthquakes. There's even a dumpster complete with carefully constructed minute trash! The gallery is spacious. I got a friendly wave from the staff member, so it felt quite welcoming. Street parking is limited around about as there are lots of workers, in this light industrial area, who grab the parks early in the day. However, it's just a hop, skip and a jump off Colombo St, where there are plenty of buses. Equally, it's not that far from the city centre and you could just walk over from town in about 15 minutes.

This was easily the highlight of our trip to New Zealand. John made the carving easy and fun. Was lovely to learn from a very experienced Maori carver. My husband is eyeing off our Osso Bucco bones to practice his new found carving skills.

Now situated in one of the side buildings of the arts centre on Montreal Street, this small art gallery does special exhibits, momentarily installations. Great!
