Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

- Raman GNoida, India604 contributionsMust visit in Summers. Very well maintained. A lot of flowers. Rose Garden excellent. Took a caterpillar tour first, 30 $ pp. Then walked around on r own. It is quite large. On one side is the Avon River. Their cafe is also good.Written 3 January 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - TravelingMomGrandmaHouston, TX1,093 contributionsWe purchased this with the Hop On Tram but easily bought at the Gondola.
The views are great, even sheep grazing on the mountain side.
You can read the history after you are at the top.
If shopping for gifts, the prices in the gift shop are fair.
There is also a cafe at the top too.
Only drawback if taking a shuttle, the city buses run much faster.Written 18 January 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The old advertising from yesteryear that was still in some carriages added to the charm. We first did a full lap of the city then returned top various locations we chose to get off at.
The staff were friendly and informative, and all in all a memorable day was had.Written 8 June 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The backstage penguin experience was wonderful to see the penguins up close and hear all the information on the penguins including work being done in the wild to protect them.Written 23 June 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Sandy WVancouver, Canada1,803 contributionsWe spent several hours walking on the wooden and dirt paths slowly throughout the park. What a delight it was! There are birds everywhere. And not just sparrows. There are attractive and easy to read signs all over the place detailing the unique animal species that are located at Willowbank. There are pond areas and water areas everywhere.
It was a delight to see the children feeding the eels as soon as you walk into the park after paying admission. We caught the latter part of the magic show and loved it. There is a small little-used lunch area with picnic tables behind the magic show, and adjoining the toilets.
A great place for families. Easy to walk. Children love the smaller and larger animals, Especially the birds that are often roaming freely.
You can purchase a bag of small food to feed the birds and also a different bag of larger food pellets to feed the larger animals such as the deer. Make sure to purchase these small white bags when you buy your admission as they are not available elsewhere in the park.
And, yes, we were able to spot two kiwis in the darkened kiwi shelter. It was magical.
Thank you, Willowbank, for a delightful day. Please give me a link if you find this review helpful. You can also look for reviews that I have written for Christchurch, Auckland and Wellington as well as Brisbane.Written 16 January 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The clip of a man walking past a building and then 10 seconds later it in rocked to the ground is extraordinary. Glad we did go as we learnt a lot about Christchurch's history. But the cost is way over the top for a family.Written 9 January 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Lenny HAuckland, New Zealand1,035 contributionsDon’t just visit the botanic gardens. The park,is so much larger than that. Lots of places to walk. Many park benches, both in the sun and shade.Written 31 October 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Robert DBrooklyn, New York5,234 contributionsThe upper floor at COCA is now the temporary home of the Canterbury Museum. They are rebuilding the museum buildings and will not complete the project until 2028. In the meantime, they are using the upper floor of COCA to house two exhibits. "Form & Fire: Celebrating Local Pottery" features pottery made in Canterbury over the past 60 years. The other exhibit is highlights from their permanent collection, such as a South Island Giant Moa leg bone. The moa was a huge flightless bird that was hunted to extinction by the Maori (indigenous inhabitants). The highlights exhibit shows the variety of the permanent collection. I'm looking forward to seeing the new permanent building's exhibits.Written 7 January 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Robert DBrooklyn, New York5,234 contributionsI spent the afternoon at the Air Force Museum of New Zealand. A memorial to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the New Zealand Air Force marks the street that leads to the museum. Above the entrance hall, there is a replica of a Blériot XI-2 monoplane, which, in 1909, was the first plane to fly across the English Channel. The elevator is also an exhibit. It is the cockpit of an RNZAF Boeing P-8A Poseidon.
New Zealand's fastest jet is the McDonnell Douglas Skyhawk TA-4K, 1969. Sergeant Ron Hermanns made examples of trench art while serving in the Pacific during World War II. You can also see a Douglas C-47B Dakota, 1945, which served as the flagship for the Queen's Royal Tour in 1953.
This is an extensive museum, with lots to see. I highly recommend a visit.Written 8 January 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
