Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Wonderful museum that gives you an overview of the history (natural and human) of NZ. It's a bit short on art, but what it covers it does extremely well. I recommend the highlights tour to enrich your experience. I know the Gallipoli exhibit is very popular, but I for one didn't get the point of the hugely oversized figures and hokey effects. I'd give it a pass.

Thank you for the shuttle to enable visitors and locals to come up here. The habitat had walks for all types of fitness or families. Very busy cafe with nice, but disorganized young people trying to manage it the day we were there. We did the self guided daytime and saw several birds. The movie was started by a guide who was taking a walking tour through or we couldn't have seen it. The short films on exhibit were very helpful. Enjoy!

If you're going to do a lookout in Wellington, this is the one to do. Views over the harbour, the city, and across to the airport, make it worth the walk, ride or drive up there. Lots of photos to take!

Being at the top & sides of a hill, this botanic garden was different to most that we've been to, which were mostly on flattish areas. In the Wellington Botanic Garden, be prepared to walk up hills, down hills and around hills.

Lovely scenic views to the city, and to the surrounding suburbia, also on hills, and then you got the vistas in the gardens themselves. Lots of nooks and crannies, and hidden areas and paths to explore the plants and trees. There's some random artwork scattered amongst the top paths to find as well.

Spend a few hours getting lost and hot and tired, because its always good to get out into nature.

The organist was practicing while we were there, poor acoustics surprisingly. Very nice interior and the story is meaningful. Wouldn't make this a destination but part of walking around that end of the district. Too bad the library is closed and you need reservations at the Beehive.

This review was just a quick visit to the exterior of the buildings, in particular the "Beehive". As an architect it was interesting to see such a different formed building, next door to the traditional parliament building typology. The precinct around it included a nice park and the cenotaph, and there is a playground for the kids as well. Worth a visit, just to walk around. We may try an inside tour next time we visit.

Oriental Bay is a lovely spot to grab a snack and take a walk. It was clean and quiet the evening we were there. Several shops and cafes in the area offer great service.
It was nice to just take a break during the day.

Probably the best Museum I have visited. Fortunate enough to be here whilst the Gallopoli display it on… words can’t describe how amazing and outstanding the display is. Loved it so much I’m going back again tomorrow.

Other exhibits were also interesting and lots of interactive display to keep children busy. I never knew a Kiwi bird doesn’t have wings..!! Never too old to expand one’s knowledge :)

It’s definitely a must visit if in Wellington

Gone are the days of dropping half a tab of acid and jumping the Zebra enclosure at 2am in the morning, for a visit, you would be better buying a ticket and having a laugh with the front counter staff, and they give you a map. The Otters snuggled together in the afternoon summed up my experience, as did the Chimpanzees and the Sun Bear, who was too lazy to swat a fly of its back. Everything was laid back. Well, it was not a public holiday, or school holiday for that matter. The staff were friendly, and the other customers were chatty. There were of course the grumpy grannies looking for faults in the Zoo, that were lurking around, that were easily brushed aside. I enjoyed the Black and White Ruffed Lemar's, who feasted on fruits and nuts. The Snow Leopard was invisible, and the Lion just had an operation, so was recovering. I thought the little blue penguins were a myth, to slow down drivers, but they are real! I was surprised to find myself watching a group of Kangaroos relaxing in front of me, without a fence, or barrier. The Giraffe was hungry and was pacing around. There is so much to do. I would like to return and book an up close and personal experience with a Capybara.

The Interislander is a great way to travel between the North and South Islands. These are huge boats and you can even bring your own car. It’s about a three hour trip between Wellington and Picton. I tend to get a bit seasick, but not if I’m able to stand outside and enjoy the gorgeous views. I’ve seen plenty of seabirds, including an albatross, and dolphins following along side. I was in NZ in 2023 but didn’t take the Interislander this trip. I have a few times in past visits.

Visiting the Government House in Wellington, New Zealand was an absolute delight! From the moment I stepped onto the grounds, I was greeted with stunning architecture and beautifully manicured gardens. The guided tour provided fascinating insights into the country's history and governance, and I was impressed by the professionalism and friendliness of the staff. Exploring the elegant rooms and learning about the important role the Government House plays in New Zealand's democratic process was both educational and inspiring. The grounds were simply breathtaking, making it a truly memorable experience. I highly recommend a visit to anyone interested in history, politics, or simply appreciating the beauty of New Zealand's capital city. If you get the opportunity to tour you should definitely do it!

We thoroughly enjoyed our drive to this remote lighthouse. The scenery is beautiful and the drive itself is part of the adventure. The fur seals are an added delight, lying in the sun so close to the road. The climb up the steps to the lighthouse at the top of the hill is hard going but worth it for the view. A fantastic way to spend a couple of hours.

Cuba Street, part of which is a pedestrian mall, is a historic part of Wellington with many beautiful old buildings and an eclectic mix of traders, cafes, pubs & restaurants.

Good just to wander up & down window shopping and people watching.

Climbed from johnsonville side through the park and up the steps this time, I've been climbing Kaukau since I first visited Aotearoa in 2007, I love it, such a view from summit and it has mana as the maori claim. there's a great feeling in the hills there, the tracks, the gullys. I've climbed Kaukau in every weather and just love the place. I've often gone from jville over summit down to kandallah and back. it's a lovely walk. enjoy
