What travellers are saying
- Neil BAuckland, New Zealand1,033 contributionsGood hike to combine with a trip to Cape Palliser lighthouse. About a 1.5 hour return trip from the car park to the Pinnacles. Amazing rock formations; you can see why it was selected for a LOTR filming location. You can either walk straight up the stream bed and back (many small stream crossings) or do one way via the stream bed and the other way via the Pinnacles Track to take in the lookout.
Sturdy footwear required. There are toilets at the car park.Written 21 April 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC. - Sivasankar SivapragasamPetaling Jaya, Malaysia62 contributionsSomes Island is a beautiful place to visit. It was educational and knowledgeable about the history of the place. Moreover, thanks to the Department of Conservation for maintaining the island. It is one of a kind.Written 8 May 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.

- Alipa50Wellington, New Zealand1,539 contributionsIdeal for families with small children as it’s flat most over the way with plenty of variety and the river at the end is a great picnic spot.Written 1 December 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.

- carol jPalmerston North, New Zealand1,717 contributionsThis is an awesome walk from Oriental Parade along ridgeline town belt down to the southern coast line to Shorland Park Island Bay.
Read the maps along the way and follow the pink bollards.Soak up the panoramic views and see across the horizon to South Island.
Some sections are steep with steps and seating along the way.
This walk takes you to summit of Mt Victoria where there are toilets, but be warned there are no other toilets until Island Bay.
Ride the double decker bus back to Oriental Parade- you will need cash or snapper card no eftpos.
Parking in Oriental Parade is 2 hours so best to find carpark building cost around $14 for whole day.
Or you can choose to begin walk in Island Bay where parking is free.
Overall it is 13 km and took us 3 hours with photo stopsWritten 5 August 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC. - Vinay HWellington, New Zealand131 contributionsClub this when visiting the Makara beach. The drive to this area through from Johnsonville is very beautiful, and needs precaution since there are may narrow sections and blind bends, we did witness an accident on our way back unfortunately. The road is otherwise very scenic and tranquil. Access a windmill on a walking path with amazing views.Written 6 January 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
- Jessisaw378 contributionsWith beautiful views over the lighthouse, beach, ocean and farmland this walk will not disappoint. It’s an easy climb if you’re not wanting to go to the highest point. For the more adventurous, definitely go higher as the view will take your breath away. Just be careful if it’s windy or you might get swept away!Written 17 September 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
- W2466XYfrankm88 contributionsThis is a great little walk. If you do the loop from Makara beach to Opau Bay it's about 10km. You get a great cross section of tracks, from open grassed areas, single bush track and the coast itself. We knocked it out in just over two hours going at a fast walking pace. The scenery is great including a great close up of the wind turbines and the rugged west coast. Highly recommend with a nice breakfast afterwards at the Saddleback cafe in Ohariu. Highly recommend!Written 7 March 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
- Kerry F11 contributionsWe did the loop as a day trip. It took over 7hrs, 3 of those straight up. Not much track to speak of in some places - lots of climbing and clamoring! A fair bit of mud in places. Had to make 13 river crossings so recommend spare socks and shoes for that section if possible. Quite cold and blustery in places. Very tough walk, certainly an adventure, but some beautiful scenery on a fine day.Written 1 October 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
- Lucinda J909 contributionsIt’s a long ascent across several streams and stream beds. It’s uphill all the way, stunning views at the top make it all worthwhileWritten 4 October 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
- TKNgaioPalmerston North, New Zealand548 contributionsThe Wairaka Walkway goes between Pukerua Bay and Plimmerton, along the dramatic coastline. It can be walked from either town. We choose starting at Pukerua Bay because of the spectacular coastal views. There is a good winding path down from Pukerua Beach Road, (just off the main highway and where the car can be parked) to the beginning of the park. There are seats along the path to stop and enjoy the views. The path takes you down to the beginning of the Wairaka walkway at Ocean Parade, Pukerua Bay. The Wairaka track itself is stony and very natural, but walkable for active people. It skirts the coast with high hills on one side and rugged coast and sea on the other. In spring the hills are colourful with wild flowers and the native bushes which have adapted to the strong coastal winds and hard winter weather crouch to the hills as if they have been topiaried. You can see Kapiti Island bird sanctuary as you walk along, the island giving its name to this coastal region north of Wellington. The Track goes through to Plimmerton, though for a short walk, we often walk to Wairaka Point and return, about 1 hour. The area is rich in Maori history. There is a beautiful carved pole at the beginning of the walk. Along the way people have built unusual shelters out of the driftwood lying along the coast. The view is always interesting. There is much birdlife. Sometimes also we have seen goats, sheep and small lizards.
The return trip to Plimmerton is about 16.5 km, so allow about 4 hours if walking briskly.Written 26 October 2015This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
