Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Really nice walk through the valley and the rock formations are really beautiful. Be aware that way there is just up, and walk through the “river” basin could be chalenging for someone. Lookout is really steep hill so be prepared for little hiking.

I took the 915 ferry over with the intention of staying until 1215. Although I loved the island and the walks, the timings given are huge over estimates unless you are a very slow walker! So I had covered everything I wanted to by 11am so went back on the 1115 ferry.

If you take a picnic, I think 2.5 hours is a good time. If you are just walking then 1.5 hours is enough.

    Lovely views and interesting history.

    An enjoyable trip from Wellington.

Like many, we hired bikes and cycled the trail all the way out to the old 'ship wreck' past the lighthouses. On the way back we detoured up the Kogangapiripiri Track ... which is steep! That said, once we made it to the top, the decent made it all worth while. Word to the wise tho - be mindful of the head on winds on the way back ... eBikes do make it much easier for the infrequent cyclist. Take suncream.

This is the best way to see Wellington and it is a city whose charm can only be appreciated by walking.

Ideal for families with small children as it’s flat most over the way with plenty of variety and the river at the end is a great picnic spot.

Club this when visiting the Makara beach. The drive to this area through from Johnsonville is very beautiful, and needs precaution since there are may narrow sections and blind bends, we did witness an accident on our way back unfortunately. The road is otherwise very scenic and tranquil. Access a windmill on a walking path with amazing views.

This is an awesome walk from Oriental Parade along ridgeline town belt down to the southern coast line to Shorland Park Island Bay.
Read the maps along the way and follow the pink bollards.Soak up the panoramic views and see across the horizon to South Island.
Some sections are steep with steps and seating along the way.
This walk takes you to summit of Mt Victoria where there are toilets, but be warned there are no other toilets until Island Bay.
Ride the double decker bus back to Oriental Parade- you will need cash or snapper card no eftpos.
Parking in Oriental Parade is 2 hours so best to find carpark building cost around $14 for whole day.
Or you can choose to begin walk in Island Bay where parking is free.
Overall it is 13 km and took us 3 hours with photo stops

It’s a long ascent across several streams and stream beds. It’s uphill all the way, stunning views at the top make it all worthwhile

You can't beat Wellington on a good day, and you also can't been Makara Beach. The wind was blowing from the south east so I decided that it was time to walk this walkway. We started at Makara Beach and climbed the hill up to the gun placements, which is almost up to the carpark for the West Winds walk we had done before. We were advised at the top that it is a long haul back along the beach over a lot of pebbles and then bigger rocks at the end, so decided to head back the way we had come.

The walk up the hill takes you up around 200 metres. The official website says something like the walk it up through the paddocks. There is at lest one point where you are scrambling up a rocky ledge. However, on a good day the views are stunning and it is very worth it.

The signs at the bottom say about an hour to the gun emplacements, and we did it in 45 minutes, and it was then a lot quicker to come down as the distance is only 1.5 - 2km.

Definitely worth it, and a good walk for fitness. The kids also went in for a swim at the bottom as the water is beautiful and clear - on a good day!

With beautiful views over the lighthouse, beach, ocean and farmland this walk will not disappoint. It’s an easy climb if you’re not wanting to go to the highest point. For the more adventurous, definitely go higher as the view will take your breath away. Just be careful if it’s windy or you might get swept away!

Stumbled across this place as it was next to our Airbnb. The walk up to the summit and beyond is so worth it for the views. This is a section of the Skywalk track in the suburb of Karori.
Can feel steep and slippery and wet weather makes the path below the tree line muddy. Once above the tree line the walking conditions improve.
Lots of areas to stop and rest if you start from Hatton Street. We started from Nottingham Street and that a rougher path the take.
Signposts a little worn and not always clearly visible.

    Dogs allowed on leash.

We did the loop as a day trip. It took over 7hrs, 3 of those straight up. Not much track to speak of in some places - lots of climbing and clamoring! A fair bit of mud in places. Had to make 13 river crossings so recommend spare socks and shoes for that section if possible. Quite cold and blustery in places. Very tough walk, certainly an adventure, but some beautiful scenery on a fine day.
