John was punctual, reliable and a responsible driver. I felt secure all day. It was a12 hour trip, making it a big day out but l think it was worth it. - kimberinoLouisville, KY7 contributionsSO glad I booked this day tour to Hobbiton and the Waitomo Glowworm Caves! I visited Hobbiton 6 years ago on a trip to NZ and knew I had to return as they just opened their new Beyond the Door experience on 1 December.
I decided to book this tour because I didn’t want to navigate the logistics of finding my way to the set as a solo traveler with limited time in Auckland. Going to the caves was an added bonus!
I was picked up from my CBD accommodation promptly at 6:30 am. I knew what bus to look for thanks to the two emails I received confirming the bus, time and how to prepare.
After hopping on the bus, the guide Mike, made sure to include everyone in the conversation and encouraged us to get to know each other with introductions. It was a fairly quiet group overall, but I still found it easy to chat with the others and Mike throughout the day.
I loved that we had a pit stop half way from Auckland to Hobbiton for a quick stretch and photo opportunity.
Mike made sure to give us a run down of what to expect at each upcoming stop well in advance. Mentally preparing is important!
Hobbiton is 10/10 - you HAVE TO GO. The Glowworm Caves were interesting and it was great learning some history of the site.

One or two of those pods actually swam up right next to and in front of the boat. At some point there were almost 10 dolphins swimming in front of the boat - it was incredible!
We also saw three whales while they were feeding! They didn't come as close to the boat as the dolphins were, but it was nonetheless an unforgettable sight.
During the cruise, the captain also told us a lot about the other wildlife in the area and how they interact with each other, we even saw kingfishers feeding!
All in all this was an amazing experience that I am so grateful I went for, even as a solo traveller. The only negative point I have is that, while there are food and drink options to buy on the cruise, they aren't open for very long and the options are a bit limited. - Dorothy W4 contributionsThis is an extra long day adventure. The van arrived on time at my pickup location (5:45 am) and the driver/guide Kelly was very knowledgeable and explained what to expected to us clearly. Water and snacks were plentiful.
The only regret was that we were in a rush towards the end of the trip. The geysers were at its peak when we had to go. Erin and Kelly took over and just kept the information and fun coming for the afternoon nature portion. Absolutely beautiful views and a nice easy trail walk completed the day. - Nick K2 contributionsAlot of what I wanted to see/do was on these 2 courses so it made sense to book the 48hour ride. Some of the package deals don't make sense financially so do your homework (the zoo was cheaper by itself). Traffic kind of slows down the busses during parts of the day so you may have to wait longer than normal. - Shareen A3 contributionsI was amazed by the glow worms caves - it was more spectacular than I anticipated. Peaceful and fantasy-like. And I liked how they split tour groups up at Hobbiton. I didn’t feel it was over crowded. That was beautiful and fun. Unexpected bonus was the commentary on the bus ride. I learned a lot about New Zealand and I found the jokes to be funny. Lunch was good, with vegetarian option. And you get a drink and souvenir at The Green Dragon. I did think the price was too high, but I had a great time and don’t regret it. I would just recommend booking early and looking for deals. This was last minute as I had to extend my trip.
