The castle of Porto de Mós, was built under the rubble of a Roman lookout post, and has so accumulated over the centuries military, Gothic and Renaissance influences based on a pentagonal structure with reinforcement turrets at the corners, although currently only four withstand. The two turrets that make up the main façade are ornamented by two pyramidal domes, finished in green ceramic. The castle who was initially an Arab fortress, from whom the role was evident during the period of Christian conquest. After successive guerrillas between the Portuguese and the Moors, in 1148, D. Afonso Henriques, aided by D. Fuas Roupinho, ended up taking the town and defeating the Saracen troops, commanded by King Gámir de Mérida.
You have a small parking place in front of the castle. In the inside there is no furniture, but allot of pictures and exposition, you can walk through it and visit the two towers, for us it was more than 10 years ago that we had visited this castle, so we went to visit is this time with our Brazilian friends.

Local guide Hernâni took us there in a cold and foggy day. The atmosphere was terrific.
A small walk took us to the waterfall.

It is a lovely walk along the yellow road with beautiful views. Previously, it was a railway, which was dismantled and made a walking route. Along the road there are many lights and there is a backlight from the ground. A great place for Hiking and Cycling. The cherry on the cake is a tunnel near the end of the road. Don't miss also the old mills near the tunnel and the abandoned mines close to the start of the path(don't go into the mines deep! There live bats, bad smells and bad flooring).
It is better to start the route from the football field and finish after the tunnel and mills.
Don't forget to also visit the castle 🏛 in Porto de Mós and refuel the car. Fuel is cheaper there than in Lisbon ⛽️
And, of course, how not to explore the old Roman road? This must be visited!

During our two week visit to Portugal, we stayed one night at the Dolinas Climbing Hotel (we wish it was more nights). I have to say out of all of our stays (which were all very lovely) we were blown away by this Hotel. Brand new hotel with great amenities and service - free parking. We had dinner and breakfast at the hotel as well and both were beyond our expectations, very good. The room was very spacious and so very comfortable. They have a beautiful pool, steam room and sauna as well that were so relaxing. You can go to the 6th floor to see a great view of Porto de Mos. Plus, the awesome climbing center - wow. You don't need to be a climber to stay here as they have amenities for everyone. If you are visiting Portugal, I highly recommend you book a couple nights at the Dolinas Climbing Hotel.
