Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

What travellers are saying
- Marc DerveeuwOstend, Belgium410 contributionsIn Nieuwpoort's shadow, where history breathes,
A museum stands, where memory wreathes.
Westfront echoes, tales of valor untold,
In the sluices' embrace, bravery unfolds.
Upon the Ijzer's banks, a steadfast line,
Defenders rose, their spirits entwined.
Hugo's pen could scarce capture the scene,
Of battles waged, where courage convenes.
Sluice gates guarded, a watery frontier,
Against the tide, resistance sincere.
The German advance met a resolute stand,
In Nieuwpoort's defense, on the sea-kissed sand.
Majestic currents, witnesses profound,
As heroes stood on that hallowed ground.
Museum walls whisper, secrets of the past,
How invaders' ambitions were shattered, recast.
In Hugo Claus's prose, emotions cascade,
Through the sluices' tale, a history relayed.
Concrete giants, silent witnesses stand,
Guardians of freedom, in the lowland's expanse.
Brave hearts held firm, in the face of despair,
A symphony of courage, a riveting air.
Nieuwpoort's Westfront, a shrine to the brave,
Where the Ijzer flows, both silent and grave.
So let us remember, with gratitude's flame,
The souls who defended, in freedom's name.
In the museum's embrace, let history thrive,
On Nieuwpoort's Westfront, where heroes survive.Written 18 December 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. These locks were opened when they were in nomandsland without intervention of the Germans by Belgian pioniers and stopped the German advance. They even had to withdraw. Afterwards they were kept and maintained to control the water in the frontline before the Belgian front line. Visit the museum under the Albert 1 momument to know more and were the system of the locks is explained.Written 18 March 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Firstly, free parking and free entry make this a very cheap day out with money to spend in the on site cafe once we’d done the entire tour. Many types of farm animals were present including pigs, goats, donkeys, rabbits, geese, swans, chickens and many types of birds with a kids soft play area and sand pit. All easily accesssible by the Kusttram Cardijnlaan stop too if you come visit by tram.Written 7 October 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
