DO NOT MISS THIS SITE WHEN TRAVELLING TO HUE. There are many beautiful, old tombs and temples in Vietnam. It would be difficult, however, to imagine one looking more fantastic than this. Imposing and dark from the street, with a large iron gate in front of a long, steep, exterior stairway. After the initial stair climb, there is a landing/ plaza with many life-size sculptures of people and animals. Also there, an ornate pavilion, multiple spires, 5 claw sculpture dragons, more gates, and more stairs... All the stair climbing is worth it once you see the interior of the tomb at the very top.
Eye- popping, detailed, ceramic tiles in all shapes colors and sizes are utterly amazing. It seems no surface was left un- decorated. It is easy to see why the construction took 11 years- 5 years AFTER the death of the Emperor. So happy the tour itinerary included this stop! Able to learn much about this important historical figure, all that he did for Hue and Vietnam. Also happy weather was dry to help manage slippery steps and fully enjoy outdoor areas and sculptures.

Here is the main site for my trip to Vietnam in 2024.
I had been forgetting about mindfulness practice due to my messed up daily life, so decided to visit this pagoda to do mindfulness walking.

From this visit and this circumstance, I could understand more about what Thích Nhất Hạnh had touched us.

Here brought me to sit and calm down.
    Very peaceful place.

There some misconceptions about this sight so let me lay it out for you: this is no longer a ‘secret’ in Hue. If you’re in a Grab, taxi, or on some sort of tour and/or scooter guide, locals know where this place is. There is no ‘entrance’, but anyone transporting you there will know where to send you. You get dropped off at a barrier, walk 5 minutes straight down a dirt road, and you stumble upon this crazy sculpture! There are NO ‘security guards’ that you have to pay to get in. Only locals trying to sell drinks and some snacks. You can actually walk up to the dragon and into its mouth, which was cool. The dragon is covered in graffiti - this almost seems welcomed at this point. Finally, we overheard a guide saying a road is actually being built so more people can get to this abandoned sight. If you’re going to Hue any time soon, make sure you go so you can say you saw this place when it was truly abandoned! It’s a little bit out of the way but I’m glad we added this stop on our scooter tour.

It was a rainy day but the lady we found made our day. With passion and knowledge she helped us understand and show about history and Hue handicraft. They produce traditional hats, incense, rice alcohol, paper flowers. There is also a little shop where you can buy some nice souvenirs. We spent 2 hours in a very welcoming place with beautiful atmosphere, drinking tea as well. And also we receive a nice present, a paper flower. It was much more than I expected and I am very grateful for this.

Grandiose gate to the palace. The central gate is used only for the emperor. It’s 2 storied gate. We forgot to go upstairs. Or could we enter when we visited in August 2023?

Renting a motorbike and driving the Hai Van Pass was an exhilarating experience! Stunning coastal views and a good dose of adrenaline.

Really interesting place to visit, unfortunately the gates to both the upper and lower areas were all locked but some friendly locals told me to jump the gate to the upper deck, which I did.

Worth reading the history of the arena, fairly sad from an animal welfare perspective but things were much different culturally in the 19th and early 20th century.

Well worth a short trip out of town if you're into history.

This is an interesting feature of Imperial Citadel. Just after the main Temple, before the next one is a row of nine huge bronze cast urns.
Cast in the middle of 19c, they're dedicated to 9 Emperors of the Nguyen dynasty, the central one for the founder. Great photo op.

The Flag Tower is pretty high and you can see it from a distance, from many parts of Hue.
It stands on a small fortress just before the Citadel's Noon Gate (main entrance).
Excellent photo op, specially with some locals around.

This was a spectacularly beautiful temple. I misread the map and thought our cabbie was taking us to the wrong location so be aware that this is an isolated spot pretty far from downtown Hue. However, this meant on a weekday afternoon in the fall we had the place to ourselves. It was peaceful and serene and I only wish we could have spent more time there.

Wellness they say is the state of mind! What a revelation, a tranquil oasis for the afternoon. I wish we had stayed here overnight, the atmosphere was that good.
Did some meditation practice, learnt about why the place was built and the architecture chosen.

The bumpy road goes on and on yet when you arrive you will be treated to an immaculate, peaceful temple complex much simpler than most others we have seen.

We visited on a cool day with intermittent rain and saw maybe 10 others max. We visited with a young local couple there for the first time.

Without a guide, no doubt we missed a lot. If I were starting over, I would have hired a guide not just a driver.

I was really interested to see a garden house in Hue. The An Hien Garden House has been kept in very good condition, has beautiful wood paneling and attractive huge wooden pillars in the front room, it was clean and dusted. I noted there were many nice curved openings in the walls for air circulation I think. The large garden area was filled with fruit trees but the ground everywhere had been raked so clean there wasn't a blade of grass - just bare earth. I was told to pay a minimal entrance fee and was given an official ticket which the ladies demanded back again after giving it to me. I requested a pamphlet or paper with information about the garden house but was told there was nothing available. I got the feeling that visitors were really not very welcome, however the two ladies became more enthused after they enquired what hotel I was staying at. At first I was told I could just walk around and have a look but then one of the young ladies went into the main house with me and explained it was 137 years old, one of Hue's princesses had lived there (I can't remember which number she said) and the men used the left side of the house, the women the right.
I think the most impressive thing was the wide, long, tree-lined, paved path leading to the house - without a dynamic guide or a pamphlet with interesting facts about the property this garden house is not worth visiting, most disappointing!

Now you're doing anything unique, though it is going to be really worth the while of yours, a monastery which fuses east along with west, Buddhist and rc. Check though in case it's not off limits, it occasionally is
