If you have to choose between the two unheralded museums along the Arno in Pisa, Museo Nazionale di Palazzo Reale and this one, Museo Nazionale di San Matteo, it is the old home of the nuns that you want to visit.
Located on the north bank of the Arno and only 10 minutes' walk from the centre, the museum has a great variety of paintings, sculptures and artefacts together with a stunning collection of ancient wooden crosses.

I have visited many museums through the years, and this museum has several unique items and nice views from a garden out back.

After a visit to Palazzo Mansi, (both museums available on a combined ticket), which wasn’t as good as it could have been; we approached Villa Guinigi with a little apprehension.
The collection is housed in a lovely historic building and the quality of the items on display would rival anything in the more famous museums in other cities.
